OUTLOOK

The roof caved in on Servite in its opener. The Friars had a 4-1 lead after five innings against Lakewood in the Loara tournament when the Lancers struck for 13 runs with two outs in the sixth. “Ramirez was throwing a one-hitter and started getting tired,” McNary said. “I left him in there too long, and then everything went wrong. I looked at my assistant and said, ‘The nightmare continues.’ ” Last season, Servite lost nine games in which it was leading by a run or more after five innings. “We lost Vargas for the opening nine games, and everything went downhill after that,” McNary said. “We played 24 games, and I probably made out 24 different lineups.” McNary held a one-hour meeting following the loss to Lakewood and said the players met on their own for another half hour to review what went wrong. If there was a bright spot last season, it was the play of Muller at catcher. He batted .333 with a home run and 15 RBIs. Three sophomores--Greene, Goldsmith and Howard--are starting.
