The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team will host the West Regional of the NCAA Division II playoffs Friday and Saturday night at Kellogg Gym.

Pomona (25-2), ranked eighth in Division II, advanced to the playoffs by defeating Cal State San Bernardino, 80-72, in the championship game of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament last weekend at Bakersfield.

Pomona, led by All-CCAA center Mildred Conston, is the top-seeded team in the four-team regional. The Broncos play fourth-seeded UC Riverside (17-10) Friday at 8. Portland State 20-7), seeded second, plays UC Davis (19-6) at 6.

The two winners will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the eight-team quarterfinals next weekend at a site to be determined.

The La Verne and Azusa Pacific University men’s basketball teams will continue their march toward possible national basketball titles this weekend when they participate in the next round of the playoffs.

La Verne defeated Cal Lutheran, 67-56, Saturday to advance to an NCAA Division III sectional at Wisconsin-Platteville. La Verne will play Augustana (Ill.) on Friday night. The winner plays either Wisconsin-Platteville or St. Thomas (Minn.) for the right to advance to the semifinals March 19 at Buffalo State (N.Y.).

Azusa Pacific defeated Biola, 67-50, Saturday and defeated/lost to Westmont, XX-XX, Tuesday night in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 championship game. Azusa Pacific advanced to the 32-team NAIA championship tournament March 16-22 at Kansas City, Mo.

Four men and three women from San Gabriel Valley universities were selected All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by league coaches.

Matt Hatten of La Verne, who averaged 19 points a game, Aaron Courseault of La Verne (15.9), Ryan McKee of Claremont (17.2) and William Cover of Pomona-Pitzer (17.8) were selected to the men’s first team.

Wendy Gibbs of La Verne, who averaged 21.2 points and 13.2 rebounds, was selected women’s player of the year. Stacey Mays of La Verne (14.4 points) and Amy Cleveland of Claremont (16.3) were also first-team selections.

The boys’ basketball teams from Muir and San Dimas high schools and the girls’ teams from Wilson and Pasadena Poly earned berths in the state tournament, which began Tuesday.

Muir, the champion of the Southern Section 2-A Division, played Foothill of Bakersfield in a Division II opener for the chance to play either Dominguez or East Bakersfield in the semifinals.

San Dimas, runner-up in the Southern Section 3-A Division, played Fresno Central in a first-round Division III game. The winner plays either South Torrance or University (San Diego).

Wilson, champion of the Southern Section 2-A Division, played Sanger in a Division II game. The winner plays Gahr or University (San Diego) in the semifinals.

Pasadena Poly, the Southern Section 5-AA runner-up, played Strathmore in Division V for the chance to play either Lone Pine or El Cajon Christian.

The Pride of the Foothills Spring Run, featuring a 5-K, 10-K, half-marathon and 2-K Fun Run/Walk will be March 27 in Glendora.

The event includes $1,600 in prize money, and medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in nine age groups.

A pro-am celebrity tennis and golf tournament that will benefit shelters for battered women and children will be played April 30 and May 1 at La Verne Country Club.

Tournament proceeds will aid the WINGS shelters in eastern Los Angeles County and San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, is scheduled for June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants ages 50 and over are eligible to compete in track and field, race-walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball, ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division, and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race-walking and tennis for physically challenged athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.

Girls soccer teams from Arcadia and Pasadena Poly high schools put the final touches on successful seasons by winning Southern Section championships last weekend.

Arcadia defeated Canyon of Anaheim, 2-1, to win the Division II title. Corrine Roberge and Michelle Kennedy scored goals for the Apaches.

Arcadia finished 27-1-2.

Pasadena Poly defeated La Reina, 2-1, in overtime to win the Division IV title, its third consecutive championship.

Jennifer Giampaolo and Kim Rakow scored goals for Poly, which finished 25-0-4.

The Pasadena City College men’s basketball team was eliminated from the Southern California Regional of the community college state tournament with a 69-63 loss to Santa Monica.

Pasadena, seeded 28th in the 32-team tournament, has defeated No. 5 Southwestern and No. 12 Cypress in the first two rounds. The Lancers finished 15-17.

Four men and three women from the San Gabriel Valley were among the top 100 finishers in their divisions of last weekend’s Los Angeles Marathon, which attracted more than 19,000 participants.

Samuel Cortez Quiroz of El Monte finished 47th in the men’s race in 2 hours 43 minutes 45 seconds. Salvador Araujo Jr., of South El Monte was 49th (2:44:04), Michael Ikeda of Pasadena 59th (2:47:34) and Jesus Juarez of South Pasadena 73rd (2:48:44).

Beverly Buss of Pasadena finished 26th in the women’s race in 3 hours 19 minutes 35 seconds. Victoria Mathes of Sierra Madre was 96th (3:41:58) and Diane Gonzalez of Temple City 99th (3:43:00).
