SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Serra High had the battle on the scoreboard clearly won Thursday night.

Forward Michael Boyd, however, was more concerned about the battle on the boards in the Cavaliers’ 101-53 victory over Corcoran in a Southern California Division IV regional semifinal game at Serra.

Serra (24-7) was never challenged en route to its 16th consecutive victory, racing to a 14-4 lead in the first four minutes and a 46-25 advantage at halftime.

Maintaining intensity for the second half, however, was not a problem for Serra Coach Dwan Hurt.

“He’s not a perfectionist, but he always finds some way to make us play hard so we don’t have to face the consequences,” Boyd said of his coach.

Thursday night, it was rebounding. The Cavaliers would be required to do a running drill for every rebound they trailed Corcoran.

“We know we have a surprise for us the next day if we don’t do well,” forward Arthur Tate said.

Serra was outrebounded by four in the first half, but finished with a 40-34 advantage.

“They need something to keep them challenged in whatever area they are lacking,” Hurt said.

Hurt might be starting to run out of ideas.

The Cavaliers, who will face San Diego Lincoln in the regional final at 8 p.m. Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, have averaged 87.4 points in their last 16 games in winning by an average margin of 45 points.

Serra, which defeated San Diego Clairemont, 112-45, in the first round on Tuesday, used a 20-0 run in the second half to take an 87-41 lead early in the fourth quarter against Central Section runner-up Corcoran (22-7).

“We just kept pushing,” Boyd said. “We haven’t had to face a punishment for a while.”

Tate had 18 points to lead four players in double figures. Twelve Serra players scored.

Boyd and center Akeli Jackson scored 16 and 15 points each. Point guard Alex Davis had 14 points and 10 assists, and guard Roderick Swift had eight steals.

Serra took its biggest lead, 92-51, with just over five minutes to play on a three-point basket by Todd Lavergne, who came off the bench to score seven fourth-quarter points.

Ryan Butler was the only Corcoran player in double figures with 18 points.
