HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Leveque’s Shutout Lifts Notre Dame Into Final

Chris Leveque pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Notre Dame High to a 3-0 victory over visiting Westchester in a Red Division semifinal game of the Westside tournament Thursday.

Notre Dame (4-0) will play Buena (4-0) in the Red Division final at 7 p.m. Saturday at Redondo High.

In other Westside tournament games:

Chatsworth 6, Beverly Hills 5--Visiting Beverly Hills scored three times in the top of the seventh, but Chatsworth reliever Tony Montiel worked out of the jam to lead the Chancellors into the Blue Division final against Taft on Saturday at UCLA.

Buena 12, Canyon 1--Gary Paul and Jason Kimble each had two hits to lead host Buena.

Camarillo 6, Redondo 2--Colby Keener homered and doubled and drove in two runs to lead host Camarillo.

Sylmar 12, Ventura 1--Tommy Mitchell drove in three runs to lead Sylmar (3-1). Jaime Cordero was two for four, including a triple, with four runs batted in.

Santa Monica 10, Chaminade 7--Freshman outfielder Jason Giovannettone had three hits and teammates Jason McLean, Adam Crecion, Ryan Graves each added two for visiting Chaminade (2-2).

Harvard-Westlake 10, Venice 9--John Schaeffer’s two-run homer in the fifth broke a 7-7 tie as Harvard (1-3) roared back from a seven-run first-inning deficit.

Rio Mesa 17, Alemany 8--Rudy Swanger, Charlie Boch and Johnny Espinoza each had three hits to pace the 17-hit Rio Mesa attack at Alemany.

Hueneme 7, Palisades 3--Sophomore Chris Gundrum had three doubles in four at-bats to lead visiting Hueneme (2-2).

Saugus 2, Channel Islands 0--Right-hander John Maggiora allowed four hits en route to the victory and Bobby Cowan struck out four in two innings for the save. Saugus’ runs came on run-scoring doubles by Danny Cato and Brandon Hernandez.

Montclair Prep 4, Loyola 3--Back-to-back RBI doubles by Darryl Dent and Jeff Shapiro in the seventh inning pulled it out for the Mounties (2-2). Senior left-hander Justin Sampley struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Shapiro got the save.

EL SEGUNDO TOURNAMENT

Simi Valley 10, La Mirada 4--Britten Pond was two for two to lead Simi Valley in the semifinals at La Mirada.

Catcher Kevin Nykoluk had two hits and swiped three bases for Simi Valley (4-0). The Pioneers play Millikan in the tournament championship at El Segundo Recreation Park at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Millikan 3, Crespi 1--Millikan, the two-time defending Southern Section 5-A champion, scored twice in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie in a semifinal game at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Royal 9, Mira Costa 6--Mira Costa had 14 hits, including six extra-base hits, but left eight runners on base in a consolation game.

Arcadia 4, Burroughs 2--Arcadia scored three times in the first inning of the consolation game. Karl Castro and Troy Wilson each were one for three for Burroughs (2-3).

Westlake 4, Long Beach Poly 2--Junior right-hander Chris Flanagan struck out 11. Matt Zeedik was two for three.

SAN FERNANDO TOURNAMENT

Monroe 4, Granada Hills 3--All-City right-hander Jorge Dorado (2-0) threw a five-hitter, struck out four and walked eight at Monroe.

Kennedy 11, Thousand Oaks 2--The Golden Cougars (4-0) racked up 15 hits and scored in every inning. John Toven and Rick Nadeau (three for three, three RBIs) each had two doubles.

Agoura 13, Cleveland 9--Agoura scored six runs in each of the first two innings. John Dalrymple was two for four with two RBIs.

San Fernando 5, Birmingham 5--Birmingham scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game called because of darkness.

Casey Doherty scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the score.

El Camino Real 24, Grant 1--Junior Tony Kyber (2-0) threw a four-hitter and Dan Cey drove in four runs to lead host El Camino Real.

LOARA TOURNAMENT

Pacifica 7, Newbury Park 6 (10 innings)--Marty Kinchloe smacked a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning.

VAN NUYS TOURNAMENT

Canoga Park 3, Fairfax 0--David Kreider pitched a four-hitter, struck out four and walked none at Fairfax. Kreider also had a double in the sixth inning, and his sacrifice fly in the first drove in the first run for the Hunters (3-1).

Reseda 5, Verdugo Hills 2--Jorge Macias and Sean Hernandez combined on a six-hitter to lead Reseda (2-2).
