COLLEGE BASKETBALL / NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Duke Is Upset by Georgia Tech, 69-66

James Forrest scored 27 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 69-66 victory over eighth-ranked Duke on Friday during an upset-filled day in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Charlotte, N.C.

Duke, which has won two consecutive NCAA championships, lost a postseason game for the first time in two years.

Forrest, who did not start because he was late for a team meeting, made 13 of 15 shots to lead the Yellow Jackets (17-10) into the semifinals.

Bobby Hurley led Duke (23-7) with 17 points.

“We allowed them to pretty much have their way with us,” Hurley said. “I just think that we think we’re a little better than we are right now. We step out on the court, we think we are going to win this game, and we have guys who have been doing a great job for us the last couple of weeks who were ghosts today.”

No. 1 North Carolina 102, Maryland 66--Dean Smith tied Henry Iba as college basketball’s third-winningest coach, gaining his 767th victory as the Tar Heels (27-3) romped.

Smith trails Adolph Rupp of Kentucky, whose teams won 876 games, and Clarence (Bighouse) Gaines, the former Winston-Salem State coach whose teams won 828 games over 47 years before he retired at the end of this season.

George Lynch scored 22 points for North Carolina.

Exree Hipp scored 19 points for Maryland (12-16).

Clemson 87, No. 10 Florida State 75--Sharone Wright scored 24 points and Devin Gray scored 23 as the Tigers (16-11) won for only the third time in their last 19 ACC tournament games.

Doug Edwards led Florida State (22-9) with 22 points.

Virginia 61, No. 12 Wake Forest 57--Cory Alexander scored 20 points as the Cavaliers (19-8) sent the Demon Deacons (19-8) to their sixth consecutive ACC tournament loss, third longest streak in conference history.

Wake Forest overcame an eight-point deficit to open a 57-53 lead with 3:39 to play but was shut out from that point.

OTHER TOURNAMENTS

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

No. 4 Kentucky 101, Tennessee 40--The Wildcats (24-3) opened a 14-0 lead and never looked back, coasting to the victory in the quarterfinals at Lexington, Ky.

Tennessee (13-17) made a season-high 30 turnovers and only 23.1% of its shots. Allan Houston of the Volunteers, the No. 2 scorer in SEC history, missed his first 14 shots.

No. 5 Vanderbilt 76, Alabama 59--Billy McCaffrey scored 22 points to lead the Commodores (26-4) to their ninth consecutive victory. Alabama (16-12) couldn’t recover after Vanderbilt made a 26-8 run early in the second half.

No. 14 Arkansas 65, Georgia 60--The Razorbacks (20-7) held off the Bulldogs (15-13) after squandering an 18-point lead.

In the other quarterfinal game, Clarence Ceasar scored 20 points to help Louisiana State (21-9) to an 89-70 victory over Mississippi (10-18).

BIG EAST CONFERENCE

No. 9 Seton Hall 83, Georgetown 69--Terry Dehere scored 23 points and the Pirates (26-5) rolled to their ninth consecutive victory during the quarterfinals at New York, almost surely ending Georgetown’s run of 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Georgetown (16-12) won three games against non-Division I teams.

In other quarterfinal games: St. John’s (18-9) overcame a 14-point deficit during a 76-56 victory over Boston College (16-12). . . . Providence (17-10) made 55.8% of its shots during a 73-55 victory over Connecticut (15-12). . . . Syracuse (19-8), ineligible for the NCAA tournament as a result of NCAA sanctions, was a 55-50 winner over Pittsburgh (17-10).

BIG EIGHT CONFERENCE

No. 7 Kansas 82, Colorado 65--The Jayhawks (25-5) used a 23-4 run to overcome an 11-point deficit and limited the Buffaloes (10-17) to only two field goals during the last 16 minutes of the quarterfinal game at Kansas City. Rex Walters led Kansas with 22 points.

Missouri 81, No. 21 Oklahoma State 62--Mark Atkins scored 20 points to help the Tigers (17-13) hand the Cowboys (19-8) their worst loss of the season.

In other quarterfinal games: Askia Jones scored on a follow shot at the buzzer, lifting Kansas State (18-9) to a 47-45 victory over Nebraska (20-10). . . . Fred Hoiberg had 13 points for Iowa State (20-9) during a 69-55 victory over Oklahoma (19-11).

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Texas El Paso 90, No. 15 Utah 85--Eddie Rivera scored 32 points as the Miners (20-11) upset the Utes (23-6) for the second time in six days, winning in overtime during the semifinals at Salt Lake City.

New Mexico 68, No. 25 Brigham Young 59--Ike Williams scored 28 points on 12-of-14 shooting, leading the Lobos (23-6) to their second victory in six days over the Cougars (24-8).

GREAT MIDWEST CONFERENCE

No. 11 Cincinnati 78, DePaul 69--Nick Van Exel scored 30 points to lead the Bearcats (23-4) past the Blue Demons (16-15) in the semifinal game at Memphis.

In the other semifinal, Anfernee Hardaway scored 23 points to lead Memphis State (20-10) to a 73-65 victory over St. Louis (12-17).

METRO CONFERENCE

Virginia Tech 64, No. 23 Tulane 55--Freshman Jim Jackson scored 14 points during the second half, leading the Hokies (10-17) to the upset victory over the Green Wave (21-8) in the quarterfinal game at Louisville, Ky.

In other quarterfinal games: Jarvis Lang scored 25 points to help North Carolina Charlotte (15-12) to a 68-60 victory over Southern Mississippi (10-17). . . . Tyron McKoy scored 26 points for Virginia Commonwealth (18-9) during a 79-72 victory over South Florida (8-19).

SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

Eric Dailey scored 26 points to lead eighth-seeded Texas Christian (6-21) to a 72-71 victory over regular-season champion Southern Methodist (20-7) in the quarterfinals at Dallas. . . . Michael Richardson scored 22 points to help seventh-seeded Texas (11-16) to an 81-76 victory over second-seeded Rice (17-9). . . . David Diaz scored 23 points as Houston (20-7) rolled to an 84-68 victory over Texas A&M; (10-17). . . . Will Flemons had 12 points and 19 rebounds for Texas Tech (16-11) during an 83-74 victory over Baylor (16-11).

MIDWESTERN COLLEGIATE

No. 22 Xavier 67, Duquesne 41--The top-seeded Musketeers (23-4) limited the Dukes (13-15) to 25% shooting, winning easily in the semifinal game at Indianapolis.

In the other semifinal, Andy Elkins scored 22 points to help Evansville (22-6) to a 74-71 victory over Butler.

OTHER GAMES

Steve Payne scored 18 points for top-seeded Ball State (25-7) during a 72-64 victory over Toledo (12-16) in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament at Columbus, Ohio. In the other semifinal, Sean Wightman came off the bench to score 16 points and lead Western Michigan (17-11) to a 61-48 victory over Miami of Ohio (20-8).

Tanoka Beard scored 23 points to lead Boise State (20-7) to a 69-63 victory over Weber State (20-8) in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament at Moscow, Ida.
