ROUNDUP : Moorpark Rally Ends Canyons’ Win Streak

Moorpark College rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to beat Canyons, 6-5, Friday and snap the Cougars’ 11-game winning streak in a Western State Conference baseball game at Canyons.

The loss was Canyons’ first in conference play this season.

Brian Vasey squeezed home Tom Anderson with the tying run, and Aaron Fischer’s two-out double drove in Daryl Hernandez with the go-ahead run.

Hernandez had four hits, including two doubles, for Moorpark (7-9-1, 4-5-1 in conference play). Lee Speshyock went the distance for Moorpark, allowing nine hits.

Ari Jacobs and Ted Kiester each had two hits for Canyons (12-3, 9-1).

In other junior college baseball games:

Pierce 11, Ventura 8--Bryan Corey’s bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning broke an 8-8 tie and lifted the Brahmas (7-8, 5-5) over Ventura (5-9, 3-7) in a WSC game at Pierce. Josh Smaler went three for five with three runs batted in for Pierce.

Oxnard 5, Santa Monica 4--Craig Arnold (1-1) allowed three runs in seven innings to earn the victory for visiting Oxnard (4-12, 2-8) in a WSC game. Adrian Estrada hit a two-run double and a run-scoring triple for the Condors.

Valley 4, Bakersfield 3--Valley scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning in a WSC game.

David Stevenson scored on a wild pitch and Ozzie Areu scored on a balk. Valley (6-9-1, 5-4-1) scored twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Arnold Settles had a run-scoring single in the inning.

MEN’S TRACK

Moorpark 82, Bakersfield 69, Valley 30--Joe Maashoff’s school-record victory in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles highlighted Moorpark’s first victory over Bakersfield since 1983 in a Western State Conference meet at Bakersfield.

Maashoff, a sophomore from Westlake High, timed 53.0 seconds to lower his previous mark of 53.34, set last year.

Moorpark (6-0, 6-0), which won seven of 18 events, also received victories from Ken Teasley in the javelin (193 feet 10 inches) John Golden in the pole vault (14-0) and Scott Schiermann in the 800 (1 minute 56.7 seconds).

BOYS’ TRACK

Birmingham 114, Grant 12--James Lincoln set a school record in the high jump, and senior Tony Serpas won impressively in two sprints to lead host Birmmingham to victory in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Lincoln, a junior who won the City Section title with a personal best of 6-8 last year, cleared 6-9 on his first attempt before missing three times at 6-10 3/4. He also won the 110-meter high hurdles (16.4), the long jump (19-11) and the triple jump (39-4 1/2).

Serpas, runner-up in the 100 in the City finals, won that event in 10.9 and the 200 in 22.0.

Taft 77, San Fernando 48--Junior Andre DeSaussure, who transferred from Royal last month, won three events for the host Toreadors in the Northwest Valley Conference opener.

DeSaussure timed 10.7 in the 100 meters, equaling his personal best, and he ran 22.2 in the 220-yard dash and 50.4 in the 440.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Franklin 11, San Fernando 2--Javier Lujan’s run-scoring double in the first inning was the lone offensive highlight for host San Fernando (2-2-1) in the San Fernando tournament game.

Moorpark 8, Faith Baptist 0--Brian Garrettson (2-0) had seven strikeouts in six innings for Moorpark (3-1) and his brother, Brandon Garrettson, keyed the offense with a two-run double.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Saugus 2, Chino 0--Chris Gill’s run-scoring double in the sixth helped Saugus (4-2) clinch third place in the Chino tournament.

Calabasas 6, Louisville 5--Melissa Krolik hit two doubles and drove in five runs to pace a nonleague victory for Calabasas.

Trailing, 5-2, in the seventh, Krolik ripped a bases-loaded double. Teammate Theresa McGee (two doubles) followed with a double to drive in the winning run. Krolik has 15 RBIs in three games.

L.A. Lutheran 10, Laverne 4--Holly Roepke hit a three-run home run to lead the Lions (1-2) in a nonleague game.

Moorpark 2, Oak Park 1--Mindy Penrod singled home Christine Guiterrez in the seventh to give host Moorpark the nonleague win.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 1, Chaffey 0--Margaret Perez tripled and scored on Hannah Griffith’s single in the fourth inning of a Foothill Conference game at Antelope Valley.

Heather Meyer (4-1) pitched a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts.
