BASEBALL : Jackson, Verbum Dei Dominate Hollywood

Two days after finishing the basketball season, Dion Jackson stepped on the baseball field and dominated as Verbum Dei beat Hollywood, 9-2, in a Los Angeles Invitational tournament game Thursday at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Compton.

Jackson, a senior utility player, went three for four, drove in three runs, pitched two scoreless innings, and threw out a Hollywood baserunner at the plate from center field.

Jackson, who started the game at first base, relieved starting pitcher and game winner William Reed in the fourth inning. Reed gave up one run in four innings. Alex Ortiz came on in relief in the seventh for the Eagles and gave up one run. Shortstop and leadoff batter Juan Venegas went two for four and scored three runs.

Records: Verbum Dei 2-2; Hollywood 0-2-1.

Jefferson 12, Washington 5--Sergio Salcedo of Jefferson went three for five with three runs batted in and had two stolen bases as Jefferson won its fourth game Thursday in the L.A. Invitational.

Mike Parker went three for four and drove in two runs for Washington.

Records: Jefferson 3-0-1; Washington 1-3.

Wilson 11, Dorsey 0--Pitcher Fidel Catano had eight strikeouts in three innings as Wilson won a L.A. Invitational game Wednesday at Dorsey.

Wilson, led by Danny Alcarcon’s four singles and Javier Becerra’s two-run home run, had no trouble with the Dons’ pitching staff, racking up 11 hits before the game was called for darkness in the fourth inning.
