COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Corey, Smaler Keep Pierce on Track

Bryan Corey and Josh Smaler completed a remarkable week by leading Pierce College to a 10-7 baseball victory over Glendale on Saturday in a Western State Conference game at Pierce.

Corey hit a solo home run to spark a five-run fifth, then allowed two runs in the final three innings to pick up a save. Corey, a sophomore shortstop-pitcher from Thousand Oaks High, hit two home runs, a game-winning three-run triple, a double and four singles this week as Pierce (8-8, 6-5 in WSC play) won three of four.

Smaler, a sophomore from Agoura High, had two hits against Glendale (7-4 in WSC play) and is nine of 11 the past three games.

Valley 10, Santa Monica 4--Cary Wichman, a redshirt freshman from Notre Dame High who sat out last season because of arm problems, made his first start, allowing four hits and two earned runs over six innings for host Valley (7-9-1, 6-4-1) in a WSC game. Wichman (1-0), who was making his third appearance, struck out three. David Stevenson keyed Valley’s 10-hit attack with four hits.

Canyons 9, Cuesta 8--John Aguilar three for four with two doubles to lead the Cougars (13-3, 10-1) past host Cuesta (6-5 in conference play) in a WSC game.

Canyons’ Ted Kiester also went three for four.

Ventura 16, Oxnard 8--Rich Hernandez was two for three with a home run, two runs batted in and four runs, leading the Pirates (6-9, 4-7) in a WSC game. Ron Tegland and Chris Mace were each two for four. Mace scored three runs. Oxnard is 4-13, 2-9.

L.A. City 8, Mission 6--Ernie Diaz hit a home run off an 0-2 pitch, snapping a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning of a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

SOFTBALL

La Verne 1-2, Cal Lutheran 0-1--Alysa Mathews had three hits and Laree Reynolds two for Cal Lutheran in the second game of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader. Heidi Stevens (4-2) went the distance for Cal Lutheran, allowing eight hits and one earned run.

Antelope Valley 2, Saddleback 0 (8 innings)--Yvette Allen’s two-run triple in the eighth gave Antelope Valley its third victory of the day and the Taft tournament title.

Angie LePage (6-2) fired a one-hitter and struck out nine after pitching a two-hitter in Antelope Valley’s 1-0 victory over Pierce. Heather Meyer allowed one hit and struck out nine in a 9-0 decision over Hartnell.
