Marshall Ends Tryout With Mariners, Announces Retirement From Baseball

PEORIA, Ariz. — Former Dodger Mike Marshall, who had been trying out with the Seattle Mariners, announced his retirement Wednesday.
Marshall, 33, was at spring training as a nonroster invited player. He played with the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese Pacific League last season.
In eight exhibition games with the Mariners, the outfielder-first baseman batted .188 with no home runs and two RBIs. He committed one error. The Mariners also announced they reassigned outfielder Carmelo Martinez and catcher Mike Fitzgerald to their minor league camp. Martinez, an eight-year major leaguer who played in Japan last season, is the cousin of Mariner third baseman Edgar Martinez, the 1992 American League batting champion.
