WORDS AND IMAGES : Business Sense : An Ojai woman has written a witty, down-to-earth book about women entrepreneurs in America.

Skeptic is my middle name. So when I encountered Joline Godfrey and her book about women entrepreneurs, “Our Wildest Dreams,” I thought, “Oh no, another one of those superficial, full of platitudes books.” Not this time.

Godfrey, on Ojai resident, has written a wonderful, witty, the-way-it-is/the-way-it-can-be book about and for anyone in business. Her credentials include 10 years through the ranks at Polaroid. The firm backed her when she spun off her own company, which she sold in 1990. Her latest venture is the nonprofit Knowledge Network.

In the preface Godfrey describes the letter that she wrote to Inc. Magazine in response to a cover story about entrepreneurs, which featured only white male business leaders. The magazine claimed that it wasn’t covering women-owned businesses because it couldn’t find them.

The editor of Inc. called her. They met, she talked, he listened and agreed to Godfrey’s suggestion that she travel nationwide on behalf of Inc. to talk with businesswomen who would become resources for future articles.

“Our Wildest Dreams” tracks a variety of women entrepreneurs as they establish their presence and change the shape of business in America. Published by HarperCollins, the book lives up to the cover promise about “Women Entrepreneurs Making Money, Having Fun, Doing Good.”

One of the lovely gestures you can make to your writer friends is to look for copies of their out-of-print titles at used book sales. Most authors end up with only one (and sometimes no copies of their books). Keep that in mind when you hit the huge used book sale, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road.

Merry, Ph.D., with 30 years experience in anthropology and archeology, will narrate the latest in a series of travel films, “Treasures of Peru,” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Oxnard Civic Auditorium, 800 Hobson Way. The Ojai Film Society will screen “Laws of Gravity” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the Ojai Playhouse. The film, created by 28-year-old writer-director Nick Gomez, was shot in 12 days on a $38,000 budget!
