NCAA SWIMMING : Stanford Women Win Four Events
Stanford, led by 1992 Olympian Jenny Thompson, won four of six events Thursday to take a commanding lead at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Stanford, the defending team champion, leads after the first day of the three-day event at the University of Minnesota with 213 points. The Cardinal is followed by Florida (134 points), Texas (108) and Southern Methodist (103), Arizona (96) and UCLA (77).
Stanford’s Thompson, the world record-holder in the 100-meter freestyle, defended her 50-yard freestyle title in 22.16 seconds. She also was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Other Stanford winners were Lisa Jacobs (500-yard freestyle) and the 400-yard medley relay team.
