PREP ROUNDUP : University Wins Relay, Edges Santa Margarita

Shira Duzman anchored the mile relay, winning by a tenth of a second in the final event to give University a 64-63 victory over Santa Margarita in a Sea View League girls’ track meet Thursday at University.

University won the race in 4 minutes 20.8 seconds. Duzman also won the 220 (27.0) and the 440 (1:01). Andrea Bill won the shotput (32-11) and the discus (134-9) for University.

In another Sea View League girls’ track meet:

Newport Harbor 74, Corona del Mar 53--Gina Heads and Lindsey Curtis each won two events for Newport Harbor (2-0, 2-0). Heads won the shotput and discus, and Curtis won the 100-meter dash and the 300-meter hurdles.

In Garden Grove League girls’ track and field:

Garden Grove 95, La Quinta 32--Jeni Barler (200 meters, long jump) and Denise Lutz (800, 1,600) were double winners for Garden Grove (3-0).

In Sunset League girls’ track:

Ocean View 66, Fountain Valley 61--Christie Engesser won four events for visiting Ocean View. She won the 400 (1:00.4), 800 (2:20.5), 1,600 (5:44.4) and the 300 hurdles (50.5).

Edison 122, Santa Ana 5--Mari Philman won the 100 hurdles (16.4), high jump (5-0), shotput (35-3) and discus (110-6) for host Edison. Kerry O’Bric won the 300 hurdles (51.2), long jump (15-7) and triple jump (32-3 1/4) for Edison.

In nonleague girls’ track and field:

El Modena 81, Trabuco Hills 66, Valencia 12--Christine Dahlberg won the 800 meters, 1,600 and 3,200 for El Modena.

In Garden Grove League boys’ track and field:

Garden Grove 104, La Quinta 15--Jimmy Sebreros won the 100 meters (10.8), 200 (23.6) and long jump (21-2) for Garden Grove (3-0). Ben Corona won the 1,600 (4:49) and 3,200 (10:31) for the Argonauts.

In Sea View League boys’ track and field:

Saddleback 79, Tustin 55--Tustin’s freshman Mike Gavar took first place in the dual meet as he recorded a time of 9:57:7 in the 3,200 meters, edging Saddleback’s Johnny Ochoa by one second.

Newport Harbor 77, Corona del Mar 59--Jared Overton won the 1,600 and 3,200 runs for Newport Harbor (2-0, 2-0).

In Sunset League boys’ track:

Edison 95 1/2, Santa Ana 30 1/2--Ian McGraw was a double-winner for host Edison (2-0), posting victories in the 400 and 800, and anchoring the winning mile-relay team. Teammate Don Pace won the 200, was second in the 100 and triple jump and anchored the 400 relay team.

In nonleague boys’ track and field:

El Modena 89, Valencia 53, Trabuco Hills 27--Chad Peare of Trabuco Hills won the shotput with a 60-7 1/2 effort and the discus (182-9).

In Sunset League golf:

Edison 205, Huntington Beach 208--David Searle shot a one-over 37 as Edison (2-0 in league) upset Huntington Beach (0-1) at SeaCliff County Club in Huntington Beach.

Fountain Valley 206, Westminster 227--Steve Yun shot a two-over 38 for Fountain Valley (1-1 in league) at Mile Square Park.

Marina 186, Ocean View 202--Brock Cronn shot a par 35 for Marina (2-1, 2-0) at Meadowlark.

In nonleague golf:

Esperanza 197, Brea-Olinda 208--Jason Henderson shot a par 35 for Esperanza (5-1) at Yorba Linda Country Club.

Servite 186, Cypress 210--Jeff McGraw shot a 34 for medalist honors for Servite (6-1).

In nonleague baseball:

Marina 3-9, Santa Margarita 2-3 (second game, 5 innings, darkness)--In the sixth inning with one out, Chris Yakura singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Anderson to clinch the victory for host Marina in the first game.

Santa Margarita’s (1-5-1) second baseman Brian Balo homered in the fourth inning. Adolfo Hernandez, who earned the victory for Marina (5-4), gave up five hits, struck out eight and walked two.

In the second game, Brian Sailor gave up five hits, one walk and one earned run for Marina. Brad Smith went two for two with three runs batted in for Marina.

In Sunset League tennis:

Fountain Valley 14, Westminster 4--Eddie Weiss and freshmen Tom Vota and Jason Hipp swept their singles matches for host Fountain Valley (3-3, 3-1). Westminster is 4-3 and 1-3.

In nonleague tennis:

Laguna Hills 9, Capistrano Valley 9 (Laguna Hills wins on games, 72-70)--No. 1 singles player Chris Marshall improved to 16-2 for Laguna Hills (3-3), which won despite being swept in doubles. Capistrano Valley fell to 2-4.

Corona del Mar 15, Laguna Beach 3--Trenton Rhodes won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, for host Corona del Mar (5-1).

El Toro 16, Costa Mesa 2--El Toro’s Johnny France swept in No. 1 singles for the Chargers, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Costa Mesa 2--Mark Pozsgai had 22 kills as Mater Dei (4-1) rallied from a two-game deficit for a 12-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-6 victory at home.
