Break up the Mavericks.

The Dallas Mavericks are on a roll, having beaten the Philadelphia 76ers, 89-87, Friday night at Philadelphia for their second victory in a row.

Don’t laugh.

The Mavericks had not won two in a row all season.

In fact, they had not won two in the same month.

And they had not won at all on the road, losing all 29 games away from home.

Terry Davis scored 24 points for Dallas.

The victory over the 76ers improved the Mavericks’ record to 6-57 and increased their chances of avoiding another NBA mark of futility, Philadelphia’s 9-73 record in 1972-73.

Hersey Hawkins had 26 points for the 76ers, who have lost five consecutive games and eight of their last nine home games. Philadelphia has lost 19 of its last 22 overall.

Portland 106, Houston 98--The longest winning streak in the NBA this season was brought to an end by the Trail Blazers at Portland. The Rockets’ 15-game streak was also a franchise record.

Jerome Kersey had 22 points and Rod Strickland 16 to lead the Trail Blazers, who outscored the Rockets, 12-4, in overtime. Kenny Smith had 35 points and Hakeem Olajuwon 34 for Houston.

Seattle 108, Utah 97--Sam Perkins killed a Jazz rally with a three-point play and a tip-in late in the game at Utah.

Ricky Pierce scored 29 points for the SuperSonics, who won their fourth in a row.

Although Karl Malone scored 29 points and Jeff Malone 19, Utah fell to 4-9 since the All-Star break and to 20-11 at home, seven more losses than it had all last season at the Delta Center.

Perkins finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in his first start for Seattle since he was traded from the Lakers on Feb. 22.

Atlanta 121, Minnesota 103--Dominique Wilkins scored a season-high 45 points despite sitting out the final quarter at Atlanta.

Wilkins had 21 first-quarter points, including four three-pointers to tie a club record, as the Hawks coasted to their seventh victory in eight games.

Phoenix 127, Detroit 97--First it was Charles Barkley with 12 of his 22 points in the third quarter at Phoenix, and then it was Danny Ainge with 16 of his 23 in the fourth quarter to lead the Suns to their eighth victory in nine games.

The Pistons’ Joe Dumars had 31 points.

Chicago 104, Washington 99--Michael Jordan scored 11 of his 25 points in the final five minutes at Chicago to offset a career-high 37 points by the Bullets’ LaBradford Smith.

Washington led, 90-89, with 5:18 to play before Jordan, held to 14 points on four-for-21 shooting to that point, scored the next 11 points for Chicago.

San Antonio 96, Orlando 93--David Robinson outscored Shaquille O’Neal, 30-15, in the Magic rookie’s first pro game in his hometown.

O’Neal, who played high school basketball in San Antonio, was ejected in the fourth quarter after he received two technical fouls for protesting an offensive foul.
