COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Boyd Pitches Perfect Game for Fullerton

Tiffany Boyd pitched a perfect game and Cal State Fullerton beat New Mexico State, 5-0, in the second game of a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Friday at Fullerton.

It was the second perfect game of her career for Boyd (7-5), who struck out 13.

Miki Mangan had four hits for the Titans (12-10, 5-3 in conference) in the two games, including a home run in the second game.

At the Rebel Spring Games softball tournament in Orlando, Fla.:

Chapman 3, Wisconsin Parkside 2 (8)--Kim Grey knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Deann Ford (6-3) had seven strikeouts to earn the victory for Chapman.

Big West Conference baseball:

Cal State Fullerton 16, New Mexico State 8--Jeff Ferguson had a grand slam in the second to tie it, 5-5, for Fullerton, which went on to score two in the third inning and three each in the fourth, fifth and sixth. It was his first home run.

Ferguson finished with three hits and six RBIs, and Adam Millan added four hits, including a double for the Titans (13-7, 4-0), who have won five in a row.

New Mexico State (16-9, 0-1) is at Fullerton for 1 p.m. games today and Sunday.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 4, Army 1--Alex Baham gave up one run for Chapman (13-13). Bob Skapik had two hits.

At the NCAA wrestling championships in Ames, Iowa:

Grubbs Advances--Cal State Fullerton’s Michael Grubbs won three matches each decided by a point to advance to the semifinals in the consolation bracket at 118 pounds. Grubbs defeated John Buxton of Nebraska, 1-0, in his quarterfinal match. Titans’ Christian Holiday (158) and Laszlo Molnar (177) lost in the second round of consolations.

In the first round of the Cal State Fullerton women’s tennis tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 5, Cal State Sacramento 4--Patty Vasos, Helen Lu and Marni Matsumoto won at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles for host Fullerton (4-10).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Arkansas 3--Led by No. 2 singles player Chris Tontz, UC Irvine (5-6) upset 15th-ranked Arkansas. In addition to Tontz, who swept 6-4, 6-2, sophomores Fred Bach, Carlos Bustos and Marco Zuniga won their sets.
