HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Grand Time as Hoover Slams Pasadena

Nate Dishington and Andrew Spencer each hit a grand slam and drove in six runs to power Hoover High to a 16-4 victory over Pasadena in a Pacific League baseball game Tuesday at Glendale.

Dishington, a senior first baseman-catcher, hit his grand slam in the second inning to give the Tornadoes a 6-1 lead.

Spencer, a senior center fielder who bats second in the lineup, belted his slam in the third to give Hoover an 11-3 lead. Dishington followed that with a solo home run five pitches later.

Spencer’s home run was his third of the season.

Doug Jackson (2-0) and James Just combined on a four-hitter for Hoover (5-1 overall, 2-0 in league).

In other baseball games:

North Hollywood 9, Canoga Park 1--Junior right-hander Patrick Fields had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings for North Hollywood (4-4, 1-2) but settled for a one-hitter in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Glenn Davis singled to left field in the seventh for Canoga Park (3-4, 0-3).

Rafael Cabrera was three for three and scored a run, and Alex Ramos was two for three, with a two-run double, for North Hollywood.

El Camino Real 10, Granada Hills 7--Justin Balser was four for four and hit his second and third home runs of the season to lead the Conquistadors (7-1, 3-0) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Granada Hills (2-6, 0-3). Balser also had a double and three RBIs.

Senior right-hander Kevin Szymanski (3-1) pitched a complete game victory.

Sylmar 8, Birmingham 3--The Spartans had only four hits in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game, but scored four runs on bases-loaded walks by pitcher Keith Reed at Birmingham.

Reed, a senior, walked 12 batters and hit two others.

Anthony Martinez had two hits and a run batted in for Sylmar (6-2, 3-0).

San Fernando 4, Reseda 1--Senior right-hander Raymond Rivera pitched a two-hitter, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter, leading the Tigers (4-3-1, 2-1) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Reseda.

Ben Nunez had both hits for Reseda (2-5, 0-3).

Chatsworth 12, Cleveland 1--Chatsworth (6-2, 3-0) had 17 hits in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Cleveland. Mark Lopez and Tony Montiel each drove in three runs. Jim DiBiase went the distance, scattering nine hits and striking out six.

Santa Clara 5, Santa Paula 3--Serio Haros was two for three, including a double to highlight a three-run first inning for the Saints (3-2, 2-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.

Larry Castaneda had a run-scoring single in a two-run fifth for Santa Clara.

St. Genevieve 6, Buckley 5--Jeremy Iaccino scored on an error in the ninth inning of a nonleague game to give the Valiants (1-5) their first victory.

Iaccino, who had four hits, led off the ninth with a single and came around to score on an infield out and two throwing errors by Buckley first baseman David Streja.

Taryll Jackson struck out 16 and walked five in pitching a complete game for Buckley (4-3).

Ventura 3, Rio Mesa 1--Sophomore reliever Robert Verstraeten escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with a double play to record a save in a Channel League game at Ventura.

Senior right-hander John French (1-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings for Ventura (3-5, 1-1). Rio Mesa dropped to 5-3, 1-1.

St. Bonaventure 8, Fillmore 7--Senior catcher John McNamara led the Seraphs to a victory in the teams’ Tri-Valley League opener at Fillmore (6-2, 0-1).

McNamara hit his first home run of the season and was two for three with two runs scored and an RBI for St. Bonaventure (2-6-1, 1-0). Jake Brown (1-2) picked up the victory in relief.

Poly 4, Van Nuys 1--Senior right-hander Freddy Esqueda pitched a two-hitter in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Van Nuys (2-5, 0-3).

Yovani Rangel had a two-run triple in the fifth to give Poly (3-5, 3-0) a 4-0 lead.

Quartz Hill 17, Highland 11--Chris Grado homered twice and drove in five runs for the Rebels (4-2, 2-0) in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill.

William Wallace and Brian Willey each had three hits, and Jeff Bowne homered and had four RBIs for Quartz Hill. Tom King had three hits for Highland (2-3-1, 0-1-1).

Oak Park 7, Crossroads 5--Chris Gorlitz was the winning pitcher and had two hits for Oak Park (4-2) in a nonleague game. Eagle catcher Damin Sterling was four for four with two runs and two RBIs. Eric Kane, who picked up his third save of the season, added a two-run double.

Santa Barbara 13, Buena 3--The Bulldogs (6-2, 1-1), No. 7 in The Times’ area poll, dropped out of a first-place tie with the Dons (6-2, 2-0) in a Channel League game at Santa Barbara.

Palmdale 9, Burroughs 3--Bobby Harmon (two doubles) and Steve Ronge each had three hits for the No. 9 Falcons (6-0-1). Right-hander Todd Berry (3-0) scattered eight hits.

Burbank 3, Village Christian 2--Brandon Mora’s two-out single in the seventh inning drove in the winning run for the Bulldogs (5-1) in a nonleague game at Burbank.

Antelope Valley 10, Littlerock 7--Chris Tapia had a home run and three RBIs, and James Juneau doubled and drove in two runs as Antelope Valley earned its first victory. Left-hander Larry Hunt (1-0) got the victory in relief, and Jason Storm picked up a save.

Paraclete 26, Mojave 6--Four Paraclete players had three hits as part of a 19-hit attack in a High Desert League opener.

Ruben Rodriguez was three for three with two RBIs, Brian Lathrop was three for three and drove in four runs, Dave Murray was three for five with three RBIs and Drew Gonzalez was three for five with a double.

Glendale 5, Crescenta Valley 3--Guy Blackwell’s bases-loaded triple in the third inning broke the game open and David Gantt (3-0) pitched his third complete game for the Dynamiters.

San Marcos 17, Hueneme 0--San Marcos scored 10 runs in the first inning, helped by nine walks, knocking out Hueneme senior left-hander Juan Tostado (2-2).

Calabasas 5, Nordhoff 4--Josh Morton pitched four perfect innings of relief for the Coyotes in a Frontier League game. Steve Saum hit a home run and a double for Nordhoff (1-4-1, 0-2).

SOFTBALL

Fillmore 5, St. Bonaventure 0--Jamie Arundell pitched her third no-hitter of the season and drove in two runs with a pair of singles to power the Flashes in a Tri-Valley League opener at Fillmore.

Arundell (6-1), a senior who will attend West Point in the fall, struck out six batters and walked four for Fillmore (8-1, 1-0).

Crescenta Valley 9, Schurr 0--Sophomore right-hander Danielle Robertshaw struck out 15 and pitched her third one-hitter of the season in a nonleague game.

Robertshaw (5-0), who also hit a home run and drove in two runs, pitched no-hitters in her other two starts and has yet to give up a run.

Elizabeth Barnes and Sarah Perez each had two hits for the Falcons (5-0).

Thousand Oaks 2, Agoura 0--Carrie Russell pitched a four-hitter, and Michelle Lauer had two hits and scored a run for the Lancers in the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks (5-1, 2-0).

Oak Park 8, L.A. Baptist 7--The Eagles (4-2) scored twice with two out in the seventh inning to win a nonleague game. May Chang singled up the middle to tie the score and the winning run came in when the ball hopped over the center fielder’s glove.

L.A. Baptist is 3-2.

Simi Valley 2, Camarillo 0--Junior right-hander Sara Griffin pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and a walk in a Marmonte League game at Simi. Tracy Hansen scored in the fourth on a fielder’s choice and Julie Difatta scored on a passed ball in the sixth for the Pioneers (8-0, 2-0).

Montclair Prep 9, Campbell Hall 6--Shawna Hernandez sparked a four-run first inning with a two-run double and the Mounties capitalized on seven errors. Rebecca Haeussler (2-0) got the victory.

Moorpark 4, Carpinteria 3--Tina Milburn was two for three with two RBIs, leading a 10-hit attack, and Christina Fernandez (4-0) pitched a three hitter while striking out six for Moorpark.

Hoover 2, Burroughs 1--Hoover capitalized on a walk and a hit batter to score twice with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Burroughs scored in the seventh on Erin Johnson’s RBI single.

El Camino Real 10, Sylmar 0--Jennifer Gould pitched a one-hitter and had two hits and two RBIs in a nonleague game at Sylmar.

Heather Gibson added three hits and two RBIs for the Conquistadores (6-2).

Banning 3, Reseda 0--The Pilots scored three unearned runs and Ompa McKenna pitched a shutout in a nonleague game. Elvira Gray had two hits for Reseda (4-1).

Calabasas 2, Nordhoff 1--Melissa Krolik pitched a one-hitter and hit a two-run single in the third inning of a Frontier League game at Calabasas (6-0, 1-0).

St. Genevieve 17, St. Mary’s 6--Carlisa Hamagaki and Sandra Soriano paced a 20-hit attack. Hamagaki was three for four with a double, home run and two RBIs. Soriano was three for three with three RBIs.
