Mitch McCoy had 16 kills to lead Newport Harbor to a 15-12, 15-12, 15-9 sweep of Santa Margarita in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Tuesday at Santa Margarita.

McCoy, a junior outside hitter, connected on 16 of 21 kill attempts and added the Sailors’ only ace of the first two games. Newport Harbor (3-2, 3-0 in league), had a 69% attack percentage, out-hitting Santa Margarita by 11 kills, 47-36.

The Sailors fell behind only twice in the match, 5-4 in the first game and 4-1 in the second. The Eagles (1-2 in league) held Newport Harbor’s offense in check the first two games with 10 block assists and four solo blocks.

Santa Margarita’s determined defense didn’t allow any prolonged scoring runs until the third game. The Eagles fought off six game points in the first game and down 10-13 in the second game, held Newport Harbor through four side outs.

“In this league, every game’s going to be tough,” said Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn. “We missed a few too many serves, but so did they. If they hadn’t, they probably would have taken those first two games.”
