NBA ROUNDUP : Jackson Scores 27; Mavericks Beat Bullets

Jim Jackson scored nine of his 27 points during a 14-2 third-quarter run as the Dallas Mavericks won for only the second time in 33 road games, defeating the Washington Bullets, 101-98, Wednesday night at Landover, Md.

The Mavericks improved their record to 7-59 with their third victory in five games. The worst record in NBA history was 9-73 by the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1972-73 season.

Dallas led by as many as 12 points in the first half before Michael Adams’ layup closed the Bullets to 57-56 with 28 seconds to play in the half.

The teams traded the lead four times before the Mavericks pulled ahead for good, 70-69, on a basket by Morlon Wiley with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter.

Rex Chapman led Washington with 22 points, and Adams scored 16. Sean Rooks scored 22 points and Dexter Cambridge 15 for Dallas.

Chicago 113, Philadelphia 100--Michael Jordan scored 19 of his 43 points on nine-for-10 shooting during the third quarter at Philadelphia, leading the Bulls to their fifth consecutive victory.

Scottie Pippen had 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Bulls won for the ninth time in 11 road games despite losing Coach Phil Jackson because of two technical fouls 27 seconds into the game.

The Bulls trailed, 65-56, early in the third quarter before Jordan scored 17 points during a 31-10 run, including a three-pointer with one second to play in the quarter to give the Bulls an 87-75 lead.

Chicago General Manager Jerry Krause, who attended the game, was hospitalized after complaining of chest pains.

New Jersey 118, Charlotte 116--Sam Bowie’s 20-foot basket with 30 seconds to play at East Rutherford, N.J., was the winner. The Nets then made two big defensive plays to preserve the victory, their sixth in a row at the Meadowlands.

Rumeal Robinson stripped the ball from Larry Johnson as Johnson tried to maneuver around Derrick Coleman with 13 seconds to play. Then, after Rafael Addison missed two free throws with six seconds remaining to give the Hornets another chance, Coleman blocked Muggsy Bogues’ jump shot at the buzzer.

Coleman led the Nets with 35 points and 14 rebounds.

Alonzo Mourning led the Hornets with 28 points.

Boston 115, Miami 109--Reggie Lewis scored 22 points and Dee Brown’s basket midway through the fourth quarter gave Boston the lead for good at Boston.

The Heat, which made all 30 of its free throws, was led by Glen Rice, who scored 35 points.

San Antonio 105, Minnesota 92--David Robinson had 29 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists at Minneapolis as the Spurs spoiled Sidney Lowe’s official debut as coach of the Timberwolves.

Lowe was interim coach for 34 games after taking over for fired Jimmy Rodgers on Jan. 11. He was awarded a three-year contract Wednesday, although the Timberwolves have lost five consecutive games and 10 of 11.

Robinson came back from his season-low nine points in Tuesday night’s 37-point loss to Cleveland with 24 first-half points, helping the Spurs to a 56-42 halftime lead. Minnesota got no closer than nine points in the second half.

Christian Laettner scored 26 points for the Timberwolves.
