HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Simi Valley Plays Taps on Another League Foe

The Simi Valley High baseball team continued its assault on Marmonte League pitching Wednesday by hammering 13 hits in a 15-0 win over host Westlake.

Simi Valley (7-1, 3-0 in league play), which earlier defeated Newbury Park, 13-1, and Channel Islands, 14-5, has outscored league opponents, 42-6. The Pioneers are ranked second nationally by USA Today and first in The Times area poll.

Ryan Hankins had a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot to highlight a five-run second inning. Hankins, who was three for four, added a solo homer in the fifth, his third of the season.

Aaron Whitley was three for four with three runs batted in and four runs scored. Britten Pond was two for five with three RBIs and Ryan Briggs was two for five.

Junior right-hander Bill Scheffels (4-0) pitched five innings, striking out two and yielding three hits.

In other baseball games:

Royal 22, Channel Islands 2--Gene Strojek highlighted an 11-run second inning with a grand slam as host Royal (5-2, 1-0) breezed in a Marmonte League game.

Channel Islands (2-6, 0-2), which lost its sixth in a row, scored two unearned runs in the first. Royal answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, then sent 14 batters to the plate in the second.

Bryan Fernandez, who was three for five with four RBIs, had a run-scoring single in the second and a two-run double in the third. Brian Del Monte was four for four, including a two-run single in the second. Jack Kocur was two for three with two RBIs.

Senior right-hander Keith Loitz (3-0) gave up three hits and struck out two in five innings to earn the win.

Newbury Park 10, Agoura 5--Host Newbury Park scored 10 runs in the third and Agoura scored five in the seventh of a Marmonte League game.

David Lamb, Keith Smith and Rich Adams each drove in two runs in the third as 14 batters came to the plate for Newbury Park (3-6, 1-1). Smith and Lamb each had a run-scoring single and a run-scoring double. Adams had a two-run single.

Junior right-hander Ray Clinton (2-1) struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings before yielding to Smith, who stifled a late rally. John Dalrymple had a run-scoring double for Agoura (3-7, 0-1) and Kevin Sass added a sacrifice fly.

Thousand Oaks 9, Camarillo 7--The visiting Lancers (6-3, 1-0) scored two runs in the fourth inning to break a 3-3 tie and maintained the lead en route to a Marmonte League victory.

Greg Aguilar doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Lancers. Andy Wilson went two for two and stole three bases and Buzzy Ketchum doubled. Jay Wolfe, Pete Lauer and Brian Downing pitched well in relief of Tim Baron.

Camarillo’s Jake Spahr went three for four and George Lopez hit two doubles.

Chaminade 6, St. Bernard 5--Brian Powers hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and lift the Eagles (3-5, 1-2) past St. Bernard (4-4, 0-3) in a Mission League game.

Powers and Kevin Lohman each went two for three, and Casey Cote and Joel Orme each homered. Mike Haugh (2-1) picked up the victory in relief.

Notre Dame 5, Bishop Montgomery 0--Left-hander Chris Leveque struck out eight, walked one and allowed five hits in going the distance and improving to 3-0 for the second-ranked Knights (8-0, 3-0 in Mission League play). Ryan Stromsborg was three for four with two RBIs.

L.A. Baptist 10, Calabasas 4--Chad Ruffner was two for four with three RBIs and Matt Barker was two for four with two RBIs to lead visiting L.A. Baptist (6-4) in a nonleague game. Ruffner had a two-run double in the fifth. Junior left-hander Greg Wells (1-1) pitched five innings to earn the win.

Josh Morton, Mehul Taylor, Bhret Haessig and Jared Dahl each drove in a run for Calabasas (5-1-1). Morton extended his hitting streak to 27 games dating to last season.

Alemany 12, Harvard-Westlake 4--Alemany broke a 3-3 tie with nine runs in the final two innings. Robbie Glenn (home run) and Chris Ford (double and triple) each had three hits for Alemany. The game also featured home runs by Alemany’s Ed Bushey (five RBIs) and Darrin Shannon, and Harvard-Westlake’s John Schaeffer and Damon Lappa.

SOFTBALL

Alemany 8, Granada Hills 0--Sophomore right-hander Sophie Contrerras (7-0) pitcher her second perfect game and third no-hitter of the season in a nonleague game. Contrerras, who struck out seven, has allowed only one run this season. Catcher Jamie Moore was two for three with a grand slam.

Poly 12, Van Nuys 7--Pitcher Andriana Nava improved to 2-2 and Alida Gray was two for five with two RBIs for the Parrots.

Sylmar 16, Monroe 4--The Spartans capitalized on 15 walks. Pitcher Nikki Wright improved to 5-2 and led the hitting with a single and two RBIs.

Chaminade 4, Bishop Montgomery 0--Kaylene Boldroff, a freshman right-hander, pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts to pace the Eagles (4-5, 1-1) in a Mission League victory over host Bishop Montgomery (6-1, 1-1).

Chaminade’s Vicki Corona hit two doubles.

Canoga Park 12, North Hollywood 7--The Hunters used 16 walks to rally for all their runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Anna Celaya doubled and tripled for North Hollywood.
