NCAA rules were apparently violated when free hotel rooms were given to the parents of Nevada Las Vegas basketball player J.R. Rider and a plane ticket was bought for freshman Kebu Stewart, a university official said.

Athletic Director Jim Weaver said the school will file a report with the NCAA after officials determine exactly which rules were violated.

Published reports this week said Isaiah and Donna Rider received the use of two hotel rooms on the Las Vegas Strip valued at $313.20 when they came to town to see UNLV’s last home game against Utah State.

A $616 round-trip plane ticket bought for Stewart, who is being redshirted, to fly home to New York was also a violation.

Weaver said he planned to meet with a summer league coach who had a hand in both instances.

Nate Cebrun, a supporter of former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, has confirmed he asked a one-time state Senate candidate to buy Stewart’s ticket and that he sent Rider’s parents to the Sahara Hotel.

Cebrun denied having links to the UNLV basketball program.
