BUENA PARK : Artesia Blvd. Link to Freeway Scrutinized

City officials are seeking county funds to study improving the Santa Ana Freeway interchange at Artesia Boulevard, one of the most congested interchanges in northwest Orange County.

The City Council last week agreed to apply for funds from the Orange County Transportation Authority under the combined Transportation Funding Program to improve the access between Artesia Boulevard and the freeway.

Donald K. Jensen, director of public works, said the study and preliminary engineering work would determine how the city improves the interchange.

“We’re just going to try to come up with a comprehensive plan to improve the whole stretch,” said Jensen, adding that the city doesn’t know how much funding it could receive for the study.

Jensen said the interchange is one of the primary points of entry into Buena Park from the Santa Ana Freeway. It also serves La Mirada, which is in Los Angeles County, as well as Fullerton and portions of La Habra.

He said off-ramps are in isolated locations, streets are congested and there is insufficient capacity to accommodate future traffic.

If funding is granted, the study is expected to begin sometime next year, Jensen said.
