A four-hour, 240-mile pursuit through the Inland Empire during morning commuting hours ended Monday when the suspect stopped his car at the full-service pumps of a gas station and got out laughing, authorities reported.

Police retrieved three handguns, a semiautomatic rifle, ammunition, currency, drug paraphernalia and other contraband from the customized sports sedan, as wide-eyed service station customers and other bystanders watched.

The suspect, wanted on two drug arrest warrants, was identified by Claremont Police Lt. Robert Smith as John Chaeney of Colton. He was arrested on suspicion of evading arrest and possession of controlled substances, Smith said.

His pregnant passenger, 33-year-old Debra Treveno of West Covina, was arrested for possession of controlled substances, he said.

No shots were fired during the pursuit, which began about 4:30 a.m. in Claremont. The suspect seldom exceeded the speed limit and even used turn signals when changing lanes, said Sgt. Phil Aflord of the California Highway Patrol.
