OCTA Buys 47 Miles of Rail Line for Commuting
Santa Fe Railway on Tuesday sold 47 miles of rail line to the Orange County Transportation Authority for use as commuter lines.
The sale was part of a $148-million sale of 100 miles of rail by Santa Fe to three Southern California transportation agencies.
OCTA bought the railway’s Olive line, which runs from Atwood to Orange, and the Orange County portion of the San Diego line, from Fullerton to San Clemente.
The Riverside County Transportation Commission bought the 38-mile San Jacinto line, which runs from Highgrove to San Jacinto, and the San Bernardino Assn. of Governments purchased the 14-mile Redlands line that goes from San Bernardino to Redlands.
Santa Fe spokeswoman Catherine Westphal said the agencies will run commuter trains on the lines, although the railroad maintains the right to run freight trains on them as well.
