Former El Camino Running Back Signs With Northridge

Running back Mike Harper, a former running back for El Camino College, has signed a national letter of intent to play football at Cal State Northridge.

Harper, the Matadors’ 11th community college signee and 13th overall, was a second-team all-state selection at El Camino in 1991, when he gained 998 yards in 203 carries. A Santa Monica High graduate, Harper sat out the 1992 season while earning his associate of arts degree.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team defeated Chapman, 2-0, 6-3, on Wednesday at Carson.

The Toros (14-9-1, 5-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play) won for the 10th time in 11 games. Chapman fell to 15-14 and 3-5.

Viki Vechinski pitched a two-hitter for Chapman in the first game, but Oahn Kaechele drove in the only run the Toros would need with a triple in the first inning.

Dominguez Hills trailed, 1-0, in the second game, but scored four runs on five hits in the second inning to take the lead for good.

Toro senior Melissa Punch had her 13-game hitting streak--10th longest in NCAA Division II history--snapped in the first game.

Dominguez Hills will play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a CCAA doubleheader at noon on Sunday.

The Loyola Marymount softball team split a doubleheader with Claremont, losing the first game, 2-0, but winning the nightcap, 5-4, Wednesday at Westchester.

The Lions scored two runs on four hits in the seventh inning of the second game to earn the victory. Freshman Rashmi Vittal drove in the game-winning run with a single.

Loyola (6-14) will play host to Occidental on Saturday.

The Loyola Marymount volleyball team was defeated by UC Santa Barbara, 15-4, 15-5, 15-13, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Wednesday night at Goleta.

The Lions fell to 4-14 and 3-11.
