Fernando Valenzuela apparently has made the Baltimore Orioles’ staff, but he didn’t help his cause Thursday.

Valenzuela, who had pitched 14 scoreless innings in the spring, gave up five earned runs in three innings against Toronto in the Blue Jays’ 10-9 victory over the Orioles.

Florida Marlin closer Bryan Harvey, continuing a comeback from elbow surgery, earned his first save of the spring in Florida’s 8-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Rob Deer hit two home runs--giving him eight for the spring--in the Detroit Tigers’ 7-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. . . . The Texas Rangers put pitcher Kevin Brown on the disabled list because of a stress fracture in his rib, so Craig Lefferts will get the opening-day assignment. . . . The Atlanta Braves released infielder Wally Backman, virtually assuring postseason hero Francisco Cabrera a spot on the team.
