Jennifer Capriati and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario had to work twice as hard to reach the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Cup on Thursday at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Both had to win twice to advance in the clay-court tournament, which was rained out Wednesday.

Of the top players, only Capriati struggled, beating Sandra Cecchini, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Earlier in the day, Capriati ousted Jessica Emmons, 6-2, 7-5.

Sanchez Vicario rolled past Petra Langrova and Nadine Ercegovic to make it to the round of eight.

Jim Courier, No. 1 in the world rankings, had to battle through a two-hour match to defeat Australian Sandon Stolle, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and reach the quarterfinals of the Salem Open at Osaka, Japan.

Second-seeded Michael Chang defeated fellow American Chuck Adams, 6-4, 6-2, in another second-round match.

But fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert became the fifth casualty among the seeded players, falling to Jim Grabb, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6.
