PREP ROUNDUP : Sonora’s Castro Sets School Discus Mark

Ricardo Castro set a Sonora school record in the discus as the Raiders beat Fullerton, 99-37, in a Freeway League boys’ track and field meet Thursday at Sonora.

Castro’s record-setting throw was 156 feet, 9 inches. He also won the shotput with a 42-10 1/2 effort.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 94, Loara 40--Jim Hutsell won the 200 (22.6) and the 400 (52.9) for visiting Cypress.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 93, Los Amigos 34--Javier Schlinger won the 100 meters (11.4) and the 200 (23.6) and was a member of the winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams for host Garden Grove (5-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 90, Savanna 46--Carl Daucher won the 1,600 (4:39.8) and 3,200 (10:23.1) for Brea-Olinda (2-0).

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 99, University 37--Steve Forte won the high hurdles (15.1) and high jump (5-6) and ran on the winning 1,600 relay for Woodbridge.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 87, San Clemente 49--Travis Harr won the 200 and 300 hurdles for El Toro (3-1, 1-1).

Dana Hills 68, Capistrano Valley 68--Micah Denison anchored the winning 1,600 relay (3:31.5) and helped the Dolphins get a tie. Denison also won 200 (22.4) and the 400 (51.4).

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 89, Servite 47--Eric Wersching swept the 1,600 (4:54) and 3,200 (10:49) for Ocean View (3-1).

In Empire League girls’ track and field:

Cypress 65, Loara 62--Visiting Cypress won the final event--the 1,600 relay in 4:40--to win the meet.

In Garden Grove League girls’ track:

Garden Grove 93, Los Amigos 34--Shannon Travis won the 100 hurdles (17.4), shotput (36-11 1/2) and discus (105-2).

In the Orange League:

Western 63, Anaheim 55--Kwanzaa Gibson won the 100 (11.8) and 220 (26.8) for Western.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 105, Tustin 17--Kelly Campbell won the distance double--the 1,600 and 3,200--for host Corona del Mar. She won the 1,600 in 5:10.5 and the 3,200 in 11:10.0.

Santa Margarita 79, Saddleback 47--Tara McDowell won the 100 (13.1) and 200 (27.4) for Santa Margarita (4-0). Teammate Heather Novak won the high jump and triple jump.

Woodbridge 70, University 57--Meisha Wilson-Duval won the 100 (12-6) and 200 (27.0) and ran on both winning relay teams, and Angela Burgess won the shotput (38-4) and discus (125-9) for Woodbridge.

In the Sunset League:

Westminster 100, Santa Ana 28--Junior Lisa Tamamasui won the shotput (36-10) and discus (109-9) for Westminster (1-2).

Ocean View 97, Rosary 29--Sophomore Jessica Funke swept her events in the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.9). Teammate Taryn Lawson won the 800 and 1,600.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 86, Capistrano Valley 41--Ursula Luna won the 100 (12.8) and 200 (26.7), Carrie Coltman won the long jump (17-2) and triple jump (32-5) and Adara Newidouski won the shotput (37-8) and discus (126-1) for Dana Hills (4-0, 2-0).

El Toro 84, San Clemente 43--Melissa Largent won the 100 and 200 for El Toro (2-2, 1-1).

Mission Viejo 103, Mater Dei 24--Beth Merkle won the 400, 300 hurdles and long jump for host Mission Viejo (2-0 in league).

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

El Toro 117, San Clemente 53--Freshman Katie Simmons won the 200 individual medley (2:15.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.72) for El Toro (7-0, 2-0). Teammate Michelle Perry won the 50 freestyle (24.62) and 100 butterfly (59.82) for the Chargers.

Capistrano Valley 90, Dana Hills 80--Kim Davis won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke for Capistrano Valley (2-2, 1-1). Dana Hills fell to 1-3, 0-2.

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Laguna Hills 196, Costa Mesa 248--Eunice Choi shot par 36 for Laguna Hills at Pacific Golf Club.

In South Coast League golf:

San Clemente 422, El Toro 422 (San Clemente wins on sudden-death playoff)--San Clemente (4-3, 2-2) made five pars to El Toro’s three pars and two bogeys on the extra hole to win the playoff. Ben Garner shot a five-over 77 at El Toro Marine Base for El Toro (2-2 in league).
