Stop the Politics at the Awards Show

As a Chinese-American, I was deeply disturbed by Gere’s message to Deng Xiaoping during the Oscar ceremony. To make a personal political statement at a setting in honor of artists is highly inappropriate. Human rights issues in China and Tibet are very complex and require a deep understanding of history and global politics. If Gere is so compelled to express his political views, he should do what Ross Perot has been doing: Purchase TV time or debate at a suitable forum.
