Santa Anita Changes, but Not for the Bettor

Share

Santa Anita is dying. This is the track that in 1985-86 opposed the state lottery. This is the track that until about 1990 opposed $2 exactas, more than three exacta races, trifecta wagering and other exotics. This is the track that held the top position in on-track attendance and handle in the country until the advent of off-track wagering.

Now it is the track with quinellas and exactas on the same races, $2 exactas on all races, trifectas on two races, two daily doubles and several ways of wagering $1 in combinations. Now it is the track that through the CHRB has agreed to ask for on-site Keno/Lotto wagering. Now it is the track that offers rewards for patrons wagering through the self-service machines.

Greed seems to be the watchword of Clifford C. Goodrich. How sad.
