Although most of the attention will be paid to the Santa Anita Derby, there are two other stakes on the Santa Anita program today.

Fillies and mares will run in the $109,225 Las Cienegas Breeders’ Cup Handicap at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf, then seven older horses will go in the $215,800 San Bernardino Handicap at 1 1/8 miles.

Marquetry, a Santa Anita Handicap also-ran who will race coupled with Berillon, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the San Bernardino. Beaten by six lengths by Sir Beaufort in the Big ‘Cap, the 6-year-old Conquistador Cielo horse has come back to work well for trainer Bobby Frankel. Marquetry, timed in 1:11 3/5 for six furlongs Tuesday, will again be ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye.

Lottery Winner, who won the Rising Market Handicap on March 4, is the 5-2 second choice. Since moving to Jay Robbins’ barn and being treated with Lasix, the 4-year-old Apalachee gelding has won four of six starts. Kent Desormeaux will again be aboard Lottery Winner, who worked six furlongs in 1:12 4/5 over a muddy training track Sunday.

Charmonnier, third as the 7-5 favorite in the Rising Market; Reign Road, seventh in the Santa Anita Handicap; Fanatic Boy, second in the Rising Market, and Memo, who ended a long losing streak with a wire-to-wire victory on an off track in late February, round out the field.

Nine horses are scheduled to start in the Las Cienegas, but Bountiful Native won’t run unless rain forces the race onto the main track. The forecast is for clear skies.

Glen Kate, owned by Bruce McNall and Wayne Gretzky, is the 5-2 favorite and co-highweight at 121 pounds with Heart Of Joy, the 3-1 second choice.

A one-length winner of the Monrovia Handicap at the same distance earlier in the meeting, Glen Kate has won seven of 18 starts and has continued to train well for Bill Shoemaker. Corey Black will be the rider.

Heart Of Joy, beaten by nearly four lengths by Glen Kate in the Monrovia, ran back to her best form with a two-length victory in the B. Thoughtful on March 7. Trained by Gary Jones and owned by John and Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm, the 6-year-old Lypheor mare has won four of five races on Santa Anita’s downhill turf course.

Horse Racing Notes

Exchange and Trishyde head a field of five fillies and mares entered in Sunday’s $212,400 Santa Barbara Handicap at 1 1/4 miles on the turf. Exchange has won two consecutive races. Trishyde won her 1993 debut by 14 lengths. “Mentally and physically, (Exchange) is as good as she’s ever been,” trainer Bill Spawr said. “She’s always had little problems with her feet, and we were never able to train exactly like we would have liked. Right now, though, she’s perfect.” . . . Star Recruit, the runner-up in the Big ‘Cap at 59-1, will undergo surgery today on his left front leg.
