COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Wins Its Golf Invitational

UC Irvine finished five shots in front to win the Anteater Invitational Monday at Big Canyon County Club in Newport Beach.

UC Irvine finished the 36-hole event at 605. UC San Diego (610) was second, followed by Cal State Long Beach (611), Cal State Stanislaus (612), Cal State Sacramento (615) and Saddleback College (619).

Chad Schmitt of Cal State Sacramento won the individual title with rounds of 74 and 73 for a three-over 147. Steve Holmes and Pat Mahoney of Cal State Long Beach tied for second at 149. Holmes had rounds of 72 and 77.

The low round of the day was a one-under 71 by Saddleback’s Scott Richardson. He had shot 81 in the first round and finished in ninth at 152.

In a nonconference baseball game:

UC Santa Barbara 6, Chapman 4--Chris Briones had three hits, Buster Neitzke, Octavio Medina and Kevin Cook each had two hits for visiting Chapman. Neitzke, Briones, Cook and Ben Mendoza each had an RBI for Chapman.

Corey Giuliano (7-2) gave up nine hits and six runs, four earned, for Chapman.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5, Utah State 1--Denise DeWalt had two hits including a home run, scored two runs and drove in two more for Cal State Fullerton.
