COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Streaking Muncy Lifts Ventura by Cerro Coso

Ventura College second baseman Mike Muncy extended his hitting streak to 18 games by going two for four with a double and two runs batted in Tuesday as the Pirates knocked off Cerro Coso, 12-1, in a first-round game of the Channel Coast baseball tournament at Ventura.

Muncy’s streak is one game shy of the school record set in 1987 by Kevin French. Muncy also tied a school single-season record with his 21st stolen base.

Eric Rafter (3-2) earned the win for Ventura (11-13). The Pirates will play Mt. San Jacinto today at Ventura at 2 p.m.

Mission 12, Pasadena 1--Free Spirit pitcher Josh Brown (9-0) allowed eight hits and one unearned run in a complete-game effort for Mission (20-7) in a first-round game of the Channel Coast tournament at Oxnard College. Brown struck out one and did not allow a walk.

Mission’s Gary Matthews, a freshman left fielder, went three for three, had two RBIs and scored twice.

Catcher Joey Gondara was two for three with a triple and two RBIs.

The Master’s 5, Westmont 4--Jeff Tomlinson’s two-out home run in the bottom of the eighth broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Mustangs an NAIA District 3 victory. Tomlinson was three for four with a double and two RBIs.

Pitcher Mark Redman (6-3) went 8 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits before giving way to Sam Minyard, who notched his third save.

The Master’s improved to 19-13, 8-4 in District 3 play. Westmont is 11-7, 6-8.

Oxnard 9, Citrus 9--The Condors scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the Channel Coast tournament first-round game, then were declared the winners on a coin toss.

Freshman Craig Arnold earned the win after relieving starter Chris Devlin in the fifth inning in the game at Oxnard.

Oxnard scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead, but trailed, 9-5, entering the bottom of the eighth. Oxnard scored two runs in each of the final two innings to force the tie and subsequent coin toss.

Laurence Cottrel, Rich Tepezano and Ulf Hopen all had doubles for the Condors.
