ECONOTES : (Green) Thumb Through These

What’s like the Yellow Pages, only green all over?

It’s the “Greater Los Angeles Green Pages,” which let your fingers do the walking to the latest in politically correct environmental resources. Billed as the “local handbook for planet maintenance,” it’s arriving in bookstores.

A project of Environment Now and the Green Media Group, the 375-page book is praised by California Sens. Dianne Feinstein (“puts Los Angeles on the cutting edge of environmental consumerism”) and Barbara Boxer (“an important public service”). Its thousands of listings, well organized and cross-indexed, are augmented by essays on everything from the greening of business to eco-feminism.

If you already know what you need--such as an animal shelter for injured strays--the Green Pages tells you where to find it. If you didn’t realize what you needed--such as an organic catering company--it tells you where and why you should find it.

Priced at $14.95, the book is already getting good feedback. Sony Pictures Entertainment bought 200 copies for employees participating in Earthwalk. “We usually give T-shirts,” said Sony’s Carmen Romero, “but decided this book is a complete guide for whatever issue they’re interested in.” Information: (310) 456-2163.
