1993 PREP BASKETBALL LOS ANGELES TIMES ALL-STARS : 20 Top Players Are Honored for Excellence on the Court : Girls: St. Bernard, which won its first State Division IV title, has three players named to the 1993 squad.

It was a banner season for the St. Bernard girls’ basketball team.

The Vikings won the State Division IV title--the first state title for the school.

“With the talent we had and the expectations from the basketball community, we needed to win a championship,” Coach Lori Pawinski said. “I was confident we would have one of the best teams. Winning the state was one of our goals. It took hard work, focus and determination to accomplish it.”

The Vikings’ Joi Turner, who guided the team to a Southern Section title in 1991, was selected to The Times’ Westside All-Star team for the third consecutive year. She was named the area’s most valuable player in 1991. Also selected from St. Bernard were Olympia Scott, who is making her second consecutive appearance, and Kelly Shimabukuro, who made the first team in 1991 and second team in 1992.

Talented Culver City guard Jennifer Nakanishi was also chosen for the third consecutive year and Marlborough guard Kathleen Stewart was selected for the second year.

Making their first appearance on the first team are Thais Dunbar of Hamilton, Maryam Gohari of Santa Monica, Yuriko Jung of Venice, Taryn Reynolds of Notre Dame Academy and Sherrise Smith of Crossroads.

Players selected to the first team will be honored at a breakfast April 18 at the Guest Quarters Suite Hotel in Santa Monica. The area player and coach of the year will also be announced at the breakfast.

Here is a player-by-player look at the team:

Thais Dunbar, Hamilton--The 6-foot senior was top center in the area. She averaged 12.6 points and 11.8 rebounds a game. Her best game came against Los Angeles when she scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds in a 61-29 victory. Dunbar was also selected to the All-Coastal Conference team.

Maryam Gohari, Santa Monica--Gohari averaged 15.0 points and eight assists for Santa Monica, which finished 8-12 and 4-4 in the Bay League. Gohari has received scholarship offers from UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego.

Yuriko Jung, Venice--The 5-7 guard was one of two sophomores to make the team. She averaged 13 points, five rebounds and three assists in her second year starting for the Gondoliers. Jung is also a strong defensive player. She also competes for the Venice track team.

Jennifer Nakanishi--Probably one of the best guards to ever play in the Westside, she averaged 22.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists. The 5-6 Nakanishi ranked third in the Southern Section in three-point shots and 10th in scoring average.

Taryn Reynolds, Notre Dame Academy--The only freshman to make the team, Reynolds averaged 21 points, six assists and six steals. The point guard is an adept passer and good ballhandler.

Olympia Scott, St. Bernard--The 6-2 junior forward had her best game in the State Division IV final, scoring 24 points and grabbing 15 rebounds to lead the Vikings to a 59-48 victory over Grass Valley Bear River. Scott has great speed for her size and is a tough defender inside the key.

Sherrise Smith, Crossroads--She was the best player on a team that started three sophomores. The 5-4 guard averaged 21.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists. With Smith returning, the Roadrunners should contend for a Southern Section Division IV-A title next season.

Kelly Shimabukuro, St. Bernard--The 5-4 senior guard averaged 5.2 assists and made 41 three-point shots to rank in the top 30 in the Southern Section in both categories. She averaged 10.8 points for the Vikings.

Kathleen Stewart, Marlborough--Stewart played point guard and small forward. She averaged 16 points, 13.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists. In the classroom, Stewart was a National Merit finalist.

Joi Turner, St. Bernard--The 5-4 senior guard averaged 11 points, four assists and four steals. She was also the Vikings’ best defender. She will attend San Jose State in the fall.
