FIRST-TEAM PROFILES

Shawn Bankhead: GUARD/FORWARD, CLEVELAND

Call him a guard, center or forward. He played everywhere. Bankhead, making his second appearance on the All-Valley team, averaged 25.1 points to lead the Cavaliers to a share of the West Valley League title. Bankhead, a senior, also made the All-City Section 4-A Division team for the second consecutive year. He was the West Valley League co-most valuable player.

John Cannon: CENTER, SHERMAN OAKS CES

Talk about a great name for a scorer. Cannon was the big gun for Sherman Oaks CES, leading Valley Pac-8 Conference scorers this season, averaging 20.7 points. But the productivity of the 6-foot-4 senior did not end there. Cannon also averaged 12.4 rebounds, second-best in the conference. He was the senior class president and is being recruited by several schools with strong academics.

Trenton Cross: GUARD, RESEDA

Last season, Cross was second banana on a Reseda team that included UCLA-bound Marquis Burns, The Times’ 1992 Valley player of the year. This season, the junior guard proved he could carry the scoring burden by averaging 21.8 points. Cross, who is a threat from the perimeter and under the basket, also averaged 4.3 assists and is an All-City 3-A pick.

Fantasia Johnson: GUARD, NORTH HOLLYWOOD

A word of advice for those taking on North Hollywood’s Johnson: This master can make you look like an apprentice. Johnson, a junior point guard who as a sophomore asked the press to refer to him as Fantasia rather than his given name Jamal, was the catalyst of the region’s most feared City team. He averaged 16.1 points and 4.7 assists and was an All-City 4-A selection.

Monte Marcaccini: GUARD/FORWARD, NOTRE DAME

He was a Knight in high school, and he will play for Knight in college. Marcaccini, the Notre Dame senior swingman who was selected the Valley player of the year, will play next season for Bob Knight at Indiana. Marcaccini averaged 19.7 points and led the Knights to the Southern Section Division III-A title, the first basketball championship in school history.

Kenyatta Niles: GUARD/FORWARD, MONROE

The Valley’s surprise team was, unquestionably, Monroe. The team’s best player was Niles. The junior swingman led the Vikings (23-4) to their first league title since 1975-76 and into the City 3-A final at the Sports Arena. Niles led a swarming defense and an up-tempo offense, averaging 17.3 points and 11.7 rebounds. He was an All-City 3-A pick.

Damon Ollie: CENTER, NORTH HOLLYWOOD

This isn’t new family territory for North Hollywood center Ollie, whose half-brother Dana Jones (now at Pepperdine) also was an All-Valley player. Ollie, a junior who averaged a team-high 16.8 points, has been the Huskies’ main muscle inside for the past two seasons. The All-City 4-A selection also averaged a Valley Pac-8 Conference-best 12.6 rebounds.

Matt Steffe: FORWARD, HART

Best player in the Santa Clarita Valley this season? It wasn’t even close. Steffe led the Indians to the Foothill League title, averaging 21.4 points and 9.8 rebounds. He adjusted well to first-year Coach Mike May’s tough defensive style and motion offense after playing in a more up-tempo offense a season ago. Steffe, a senior, is also one of the best players on the school’s golf team.

Johnny Williams: CENTER, TAFT

Every team needs a big man, and Taft’s Williams filled the role. During a season in which there were few dominant centers in the Valley, Williams carried Taft and earned All-City 4-A honors in the process. The junior averaged 18.2 points and 11.3 rebounds. He also averaged 3.8 blocks and was an All-West Valley League selection for the second consecutive year.

Joe Wyatt: GUARD/FORWARD, KENNEDY

Talk about consistency. Wyatt averaged 30.6 points to rank among the state’s scoring leaders. Despite being the focus of considerable defensive attention, Wyatt’s low game of the year was 22 points. Wyatt, a senior, made the All-Valley and All-City 4-A teams for the second consecutive year. He was the West Valley League co-most valuable player with Bankhead.
