BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Reed Says He Had Close Call

Share

Jody Reed said the two-run double that Otis Nixon hit during Thursday’s game came so close to his face when it took a bad hop that he felt it go by.

“But it didn’t hit me,” Reed said. “Their infield is in good shape, but I think that ball hit right on the lip where the grass meets the dirt.”

Reed made the last out of the eighth inning and came out of Thursday’s game when Dodger Manager Tom Lasorda made a double switch. “I haven’t played on a team without a designated hitter in a long time,” said Reed, who played for the Boston Red Sox before the Dodgers. “So I guess that was the first time I have ever been taken out on a double switch. I’ll tell you what, when I was sitting on that bench I said, ‘Boy, I’ll make sure not to make the last out of an inning again.”

Pedro Martinez moved into a new apartment in Albuquerque on Thursday morning, spent the day unpacking, then went to the Dukes’ game as the opening-day starter to find out he might be joining the Dodgers in Atlanta. “So after I got the call, I went back home and packed everything back up again.”

Martinez joined the club Thursday after closer Todd Worrell was put on the 15-disabled list because of a sprained right forearm. . . . Mike Piazza took batting practice but did not play because he still had soreness in the right side of his lower back.
