1993 PREP BASKETBALL ALL-STARS : BOYS’ ALL-STAR TEAM : Loyola’s Mr. Three-Peat Heads Super Squad

For the third consecutive year, Toby Bailey of Loyola High has been named to The Times’ Central City All-Star basketball team.

Bailey, who averaged 25.5 points and 12 rebounds, guided the Cubs to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division I-A basketball playoffs. He was one of four juniors to make the 1993 Central City first team.

Crenshaw juniors Kristaan Johnson and Tremaine Fowlkes, who led the Cougars to the state Division I title, and Dayron Harris of Washington were also selected.

In addition to Bailey, guards Kenya Wilkins of Dorsey and Troy Matthews of Manual Arts were repeat selections to the boys’ teams. Wilkins, who averaged 19.6 points, was one of the top point guards in the City. He will attend Oregon in the fall. Matthews, who averaged 20.3 points, will attend Southern Methodist University.

“Everyone talks about the seniors’ class--and they were a talented group of players--but I think the juniors are going to bring more attention to the inner city,” Manual Arts Coach Randolph Simpson said. “It is quiet now, but I expect to hear phone calls from college recruiters.”

Rounding out the first team are Rickey Brown of Fremont, Davy Fortson of Dorsey, Alex Gomez Jr. of Garfield and Eric Wright of South Gate.

The players will receive their awards during a breakfast Sunday at the University Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Here is a player-by-player look at the team.

Toby Bailey, Loyola--The 6-5 forward was selected one of the top 15 juniors in the state by Cal-Hi sports magazine. He also was named to the Southern Section Division I second team. He was the focal point in the Cubs’ offense and his ability to score led Loyola into the playoffs. He is considered one of the top prospects in the nation.

Rickey Brown, Fremont--Brown was named to the all-City Section team for the second consecutive year. One of the best outside shooters in the City, the 6-2 swingman helped Fremont win 3-A titles in 1991 and 1992. Brown averaged 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and three assists. He led Fremont with 16 points in a quarterfinal loss to Crenshaw, which won the City 4-A and state titles.

Davy Fortson, Dorsey--Another outstanding shooter, Fortson was a finalist to play in the McDonald’s East-West All-American game. The 6-4 guard combined with Kenya Wilkins to lead Dorsey to the City 4-A finals. He averaged 20.5 points, five rebounds and 3.1 assists. He was named to the City 4-A team.

Tremaine Fowlkes, Crenshaw--The 6-6 forward was an outstanding scorer, but it was his leadership midway through the season that made the difference for the Cougars. Fowlkes averaged 21.3 points and 16.4 rebounds. He was voted one of the top 30 players in the state and one of the top 15 juniors by Cal-Hi Sports. He scored 22 points in the City final and 17 points in the state final. Fowlkes will be among the top Division I prospects in the state.

Alex Gomez Jr., Garfield--The 6-5 center led the Bulldogs with 26 points and nine rebounds a game. Gomez was selected to the City 3-A team after guiding Garfield to the quarterfinals. He scored 28 points in a first-round victory over Birmingham.

Dayron Harris, Washington--The 6-5 junior forward was a dominating player around the basket, averaging 18.7 points and 10.1 rebounds. He scored 24 points in the finals of the L.A. Officials Tournament as the Generals handed Crenshaw one of its two losses of the season. Harris also made the City 4-A team.

Kristaan Johnson, Crenshaw--The 6-5 forward was voted the State Junior Player of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports. A transfer from Montclair Prep, Johnson, who averaged 22.6 points and 14 rebounds, also became one of the first players ever voted to a Southern Section and City Section all-star teams during a career. He made the Southern Section Division V team as a sophomore and was voted the City 4-A Player of the Year in 1993. Johnson made the game-winning shot during the final seconds against Mater Dei in the Southern California Regional, which was voted the game of the year by Cal-Hi.

Troy Matthews, Manual Arts--Despite missing the final eight games, Matthews was voted to the City 4-A team for the second consecutive season. An outstanding offensive performer, Matthews averaged 20.3 points, 7.8 assists and 5.7 rebounds.

Kenya Wilkins, Dorsey--Wilkins was voted one of the top 30 players in the state and one of the top 10 in Division I. The 5-9 guard was a brilliant playmaker and helped Dorsey reach the City 4-A finals, where he scored 15 points against Crenshaw. Wilkins was named to the City 4-A team for the second consecutive year. He averaged 19.6 points, three rebounds and 7.2 assists.

Eric Wright, South Gate--The 6-3 senior forward was one of the City’s top outside shooters, averaging 21 points and eight rebounds. He made the City 3-A team as a sophomore and the 4-A team as a senior after missing his junior season with an ankle injury. Wright plans to continue his career at Harbor College in the fall.
