Fritz, a three-year starter at second base, might not be the best player on the Fighting Irish softball team, but last week she was the most valuable. Fritz batted .421 (eight for 19) and helped Kennedy to the title of the Woodbridge tournament. She scored the winning run in a 1-0 victory over Cerritos in the quarterfinals Monday and drove in the winning run in the 12th inning of a 2-1 victory over Laguna Hills in the semifinals Tuesday. “She was just a little clutch player in the tournament,” Kennedy Coach Sue Hall said. Fritz also made the plays on defense. She had 25 putouts and nine assists and made only one error.

Other top performers:

Tustin’s Liza Alexander finished fifth in the 3,200 at the Arcadia Invitational, finishing in 10:57.33, the best mark in Orange County this season.

Erryn Gutjahr hit a triple with the bases loaded to give Kennedy a 3-0 victory over La Habra in the title game of the Woodbridge tournament.

Amy Tessman pitched a no-hitter in Foothill’s 1-0 victory over Garden Grove in the consolation semifinal of the Woodbridge tournament. She had a three-hitter in the consolation final, a 3-1 victory over Fullerton.

Ocean View’s Christie Engesser finished second in the 800-meters at the Arcadia Invitational, finishing in 2 minutes 13.14 seconds and trailing only Miesha Marzell of Oakland Bishop O’Dowd High, who ran the fastest time in the nation this season (2:11.69).
