PREP ROUNDUP : Malone’s Sweep Enables Savanna to Edge Anaheim in Tennis

Robert Malone won his last singles set to give Savanna a 9-9 tie in sets and the Rebels an 89-86 edge in games over host Anaheim to win an Orange League boys’ tennis match Wednesday.

Malone swept his sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, and defeated Ryan Dunford, 6-4, in the match’s final set. Savanna improved to 4-6, 1-2 in league. Anaheim is 1-5, 0-3.

In other Orange League matches:

Brea-Olinda 14, Magnolia 4--Regi Buenviaje swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for Brea-Olinda (10-3, 3-0).

Valencia 13, Western 5--Phong Nguyen swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, for host Valencia (9-4, 3-0).

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 10, Esperanza 8--Mike Burgess swept in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to improve to 37-5 this season for Esperanza (10-4, 2-2). Billy Ray Geisler and David Han swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, for host Los Alamitos (11-2, 5-0).

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Fountain Valley 3, Marina 0--Dave Uribe had 10 kills to lead Fountain Valley (7-2, 5-2) to a 15-12, 15-7, 15-3 victory.

Huntington Beach 3, Servite 0--Phil Adam had 10 kills to lead Huntington Beach (9-0, 7-0) to its 15-5, 15-0, 15-10 victory over host Servite (0-7 in league).

Santa Ana 3, Ocean View 0--Jose Diaz had 38 assists and John Boyd had 21 kills to lead Santa Ana (9-1, 6-1) to a 15-5, 15-10, 15-12 victory.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 3, Los Alamitos 0--Paul Nihipali had 14 kills to lead Esperanza (8-1, 3-0) to a 15-5, 15-11, 15-6 victory. Los Alamitos is 3-3, 1-1.

Foothill 3, Cypress 0--Rich Lambourne had 15 kills for Foothill (8-1, 2-1), which won, 15-1, 15-10, 15-9. Cypress is 4-4, 0-2.

In nonleague golf:

Western 230, Westminster 253--Tiger Woods had three birdies and shot a one-under 35 for Western at Los Coyotes.

In Empire League boys’ swimming:

Los Alamitos 96, Esperanza 74--Freshman Tim Haney was a double winner for Los Alamitos (9-0, 3-0) with victories in the 200 freestyle (1:50.30) and the 100 freestyle (49.96).

Dru Wasson (22.08) and Eric Poole (22.21) both qualified for the Southern Section meet in the 50 freestyle for Esperanza. Wasson was joined by teammates Ian Ching, Craig Thomas and Eric Poole in qualifying as a 200 freestyle relay team with a time of 1:33.63.

In Sea View League boys’ swimming:

Irvine 93, Saddleback 41--Jason Lezak won the 100 butterfly (58.32) and 500 freestyle (4:57.33), Steven Ronson won the 200 IM (2:03.42) and 100 freestyle (1:50.19) and each swam on two winning relay teams for Irvine (6-1, 5-0).

In Orange League boys’ swimming:

Villa Park 110, Orange 57--Matt Cornue qualified for the Southern Section meet in the 100 butterfly (55.28) and the 100 backstroke (56.19) for Villa Park (4-2, 2-1).

In Orange League girls’ swimming:

Villa Park 112, Orange 58--Senior Catherine Pharris was a double winner, capturing the 200 freestyle (2:01.27) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.11) for Villa Park (5-1, 3-0). Teammate Michelle Morris won the 200 individual medley (2:18.17) and the 100 freestyle (57.04).
