NEWPORT BEACH : Garage Destroyed by Fire; Cat Saved

Share

Fire destroyed a garage Tuesday morning, causing more than $70,000 in damage but causing no injuries, firefighters said.

A firefighter managed to save a cat that was overcome by heat and smoke.

The cat, named Radar, was taken by animal control officers to a local veterinarian for observation and is expected to recover from the 10:30 a.m. fire, which engulfed a garage attached to a single-story house at 97 Pelican Court.

A neighbor called the Fire Department after hearing an explosion that may have caused the fire, Fire Capt. Craig Chastain said.

“It burned an entire garage,” Chastain said. “When the engine pulled up, the fire was burning through the roof. It encroached into the entry of the house, burning out some of the ceiling and damaging a back wall in the kitchen.”

It took 29 firefighters from Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and the County Fire Department about 25 minutes to bring the fire under control.

No one was home when the fire broke out, and there were no injuries.

The fire caused about $40,000 in structural damage and $35,000 in damage to contents, including a Jeep Cherokee that was parked inside the garage.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
