Deal Done: Montana Is a Chief

The he’s-going, he’s-staying saga of quarterback Joe Montana has been resolved.

He’s going to the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he had a tentative agreement since Saturday.

Since then, the Chiefs and San Francisco have haggled over compensation, the 49ers apparently desiring what Kansas City seemed unwilling to give: a first-round draft choice.

All that ended Tuesday. Carl Peterson, Chiefs’ president and general manager, said in a statement that he had reached an agreement with 49ers President Carmen Policy, and the trade will “include a second player and two draft choices.” The statement did not elaborate.

Montana had one year at $2.5 million remaining on his contract.

San Francisco had gone so far as to back off any prospective deal and offer to call Montana, 37 in June, their “designated starter” on Sunday, after telling him that he was free to shop his services around the league because NFL most valuable player Steve Young was going to be their starting quarterback.
