BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Lewis Is Expected to Start Saturday

Share

It would appear to be a foregone conclusion that Scott Lewis would assume the role of the Angels’ fifth starter Saturday, but Manager Buck Rodgers would say only that Lewis is “the leading candidate.” A decision will not be made until Friday, Rodgers said.

Lewis, who was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a bruised right elbow on April 4, pitched six innings for double-A Midland against Wichita on Monday. He gave up six hits and one run with two strikeouts.

For the time being, Rodgers said he is content to keep Julio Valera in the bullpen. Russ Springer, another candidate, has struggled in two starts at triple-A Vancouver and Rodgers isn’t eager to push him before he is comfortable on the minor league level.

The Angels will need a fifth starter for the first time this season when they play the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.
