Boxer Known to Have HIV Fought Twice
A a 21-year-old Mexican junior-featherweight, Eduardo Castro, fought twice in California after he was discovered to be HIV-positive by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and in spite of a bulletin it sent out to all the other state commissions, Newsday reported in today’s editions. There is evidence that at least one more boxer in Nevada is HIV-positive.
Castro is not known to have fought since losing a four-round decision to Eddie Lee Croft in San Francisco on Oct. 11, 1991, less than two months after he was suspended by Nevada for “medical reasons.” He had also fought on Sept. 21, 1991, losing a decision to Joel Diaz in Indio.
World Boxing Organization featherweight champion Ruben Palacio had his title stripped last week after testing positive for the AIDS virus.
