PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Reinhart’s RBI Gives Mission Viejo a Victory Over Mater Dei

Todd Reinhart, a sophomore batting eighth in the Mission Viejo lineup, lined a single down the third-base line with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and gave the Diablos a 2-1 victory over Mater Dei in a South Coast League game Wednesday at Mission Viejo.

The Diablos (9-8, 3-5 in league) handed Mater Dei (14-4, 6-2) its second consecutive league loss and dealt Monarch starter Mike McDonald his first loss of the season after six victories.

Mission Viejo pitcher Jason Sperling, a sophomore, limited Mater Dei to four hits, two of which were in the first inning, when the Monarchs scored their only run. Sperling (3-3) struck out five and walked one.

Mission Viejo tied the score in the fifth when Erick Fielding tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

In other South Coast League games:

Dana Hills 6, Capistrano Valley 3--Scott Maynard (3-3) allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked two in a complete-game victory that put the Dolphins (12-7, 5-3) alone in second place. Capistrano Valley is 11-6, 4-4.

Seth Etherton’s two-run homer gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the second and Jon Holm hit a solo homer in the third to give them a 4-0 lead. Holm and Etherton each have four home runs this season.

El Toro 11, Sam Clemente 7 (eight innings)--Jake Steel’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth won it for host El Toro (10-9, 4-4). Steel had six RBIs. Josh Fricke’s base hit in the bottom of the seventh drove in two runs to send the game to extra innings.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 9, Los Amigos 1--Craig Kuzmic’s double with two outs in the top of the seventh inning broke up a combined no-hitter bid by Rancho Alamitos’ Adam Maldonado and Ed Taylor. Nathan Freeman had three hits and three RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (12-4, 4-3).

Kennedy 15, Santiago 4--Chris Clark went three for three with two RBIs and scored three runs to help Kennedy improve to 6--1 in league.

La Quinta 18, Bolsa Grande 4--Jim Livernois went four for four with three RBIs and scored three runs for La Quinta (15--4, 5--2).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 12, Fullerton 9--Peter Lythgoe went three for four with one RBI and two runs scored to lead host Sonora to its victory. Sonora designated hitter Todd Vorell, who also scored two runs, had three RBIs on a triple in the third.

Sunny Hills 2, La Habra 1--Eric Smith hit a two-out RBI triple in the sixth inning to lead Sunny Hills (4-4 in league).

Troy 2, Buena Park 1--With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Rich Richey singled in Brian Burchit from third for the winning run for Troy (13-3-1, 7-0-1). Rick Parmenter pitched a three-hitter, striking out five and walking one for the 10th-ranked Warriors. Buena Park is 11-5, 4-4.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 8, Western 4--John Stoddard drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the fourth inning for Brea-Olinda (11-6-1, 5-2-1). Stoddard went two for three with one RBI and two stolen bases.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 11, Newport Harbor 1--Tommie Louie went three for three, scored two runs and had an RBI double in the first inning to lead host Irvine (14-6, 5-2). Louie (7-2) didn’t allow a hit in four innings and hasn’t given up a hit in his last 11 innings.
