NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Reds Add Kelly and Mitchell to List of Injured in 5-4 Loss

The Cincinnati Reds not only lost a game to the Pittsburgh Pirates and knuckleballer Tim Wakefield on Thursday at Pittsburgh, they lost two more players to injuries.

Only a night after reliever Rob Dibble broke his left arm in a home-plate collision, outfielders Bobby Kelly and Kevin Mitchell went down with pulled hamstrings in the Pirates’ 5-4 victory. Kelly left in the first inning and Mitchell in the fourth, and both are listed as day to day.

Meanwhile, Wakefield survived a rough first inning--and nine walks--and John Smiley had a rough first start back in his own town, blowing a three-run lead.

Wakefield (2-2) pitched a four-hitter to outpitch Smiley (0-3), the former Pirate who lasted only 5 2/3 innings in his first start in Pittsburgh since he lost Game 7 of the 1991 playoffs.

San Diego 2, Philadelphia 1--Andy Benes struck out five and walked two as he beat the Phillies for the seventh time in 10 starts.

Benes (3-1) ran into trouble in the ninth at Philadelphia after retiring the first two batters. His 1988 U.S. Olympic teammate, Mickey Morandini, doubled, John Kruk walked and Dave Hollins delivered an RBI single.

Rich Rodriguez relieved and retired Darren Daulton on a fly to Tony Gwynn for the final out for his second save.

Terry Mulholland (2-2) pitched six innings and gave up seven hits and two runs for his second defeat in a row and only the fourth loss in the first 14 games for Philadelphia, still atop the NL East.

San Francisco 13, New York 4--Robby Thompson had four of San Francisco’s 19 hits and drove in four runs as the Giants routed the Mets at New York.

John Burkett (4-0) gave up four runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings to become the NL’s first four-game winner. Mike Jackson allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings and Rod Beck finished the combined five-hitter.

The Giants took a 3-0 lead in the third against starter Pete Schourek (1-2). Darren Lewis hit a one-out infield single and scored on Carreon’s homer. Williams singled with two outs, Barry Bonds walked and Thompson singled in a run.

Florida 4, Atlanta 3--Catcher Benito Santiago retrieved a bouncing pitch and tagged Otis Nixon out at the plate as he tried to score the tying run with two out in the ninth, preserving the Marlins’ victory over Atlanta at Miami.

Trailing by two runs entering the ninth, the Braves made it 4-3 on Jeff Blauser’s sacrifice fly off Bryan Harvey.

After a stolen base and a walk, Harvey threw a 1-2 pitch in the dirt to Terry Pendleton that got a few feet behind Santiago, who grabbed the ball and, lunging, tagged out Nixon at the plate with the ball in his bare hand.

Jack Armstrong (2-2) got the victory after holding Atlanta to one unearned run in seven innings. Harvey picked up his fourth save.

Orestes Destrade hit a two-out, two-run homer against Steve Avery (1-2) in the opening inning, the first home run for the Marlins’ cleanup hitter in 55 at-bats this season.

St. Louis 5, Colorado 2--Todd Zeile broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single to highlight a three-run eighth inning as the Cardinals beat the Rockies at St. Louis.

Ray Lankford led off the eighth with a triple off Gary Wayne (0-2). Zeile then lined a 3-0 pitch from Jeff Parrett for his second hit of the day. Tom Pagnozzi added an RBI single and Jose Oquendo squeezed home a run later in the inning.

Mike Perez (2-1) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth. Lee Smith worked the ninth for his sixth save.
