TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl and Korda Are Upset

Ivan Lendl was downright frank after losing to 11th-seeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain in a third-round match Thursday in the Monte Carlo Open at Monaco.

“(It) was one of the worst matches I played in the last 10 years,” the fifth-seeded Lendl said. “You try to forget about it and work on what you need to work on.”

It would appear that Lendl needs lots of work. Bruguera needed only 1 hour 17 minutes to post a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lendl, who made 31 unforced errors to Bruguera’s 11.

“The forehand was missing in my game,” Lendl said. “I hit them well in practice, but then I couldn’t hit them at all.

“You play matches like this every now and then and you have to accept it.”

Third-seeded Petr Korda was also an upset victim, falling to unseeded Cedric Pioline of France, 6-3, 6-0.

In other third-round matches, Alex Corretja of Spain, a qualifier, defeated Olympic champion Marc Rosset, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); Jonas Svensson, who received a wild-card entry into the tournament, breezed past fellow Swede Ulf Stenlund, 6-0, 6-1; Carlos Costa of Spain beat Andrei Cherkasov of Russia, 6-1, 6-0, and defending champion Thomas Muster of Austria beat Magnus Larsson of Sweden, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

The quarterfinals are today, featuring a match between top-seeded Stefan Edberg and seventh-seeded Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine, who has won his last 13 matches on clay.

“I have lots of confidence,” Medvedev said. “Now I can go on the court and know what I can want from myself. Now I can go on the court and play my game.”

Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez of Spain were second-round winners in the La Familia Open at Barcelona, Spain.

Sanchez Vicario, who became the top-seeded player when Monica Seles withdrew before the tournament because of illness, defeated Radka Zrubakova of Slovakia, 6-1, 6-0.

Martinez beat Claire Wegink of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-1.

Sixth-seeded Mary Pierce, who lives in Florida and plays out of France, defeated Silke Frankl of Germany, 6-0, 6-1; No. 4 Amanda Coetzer of South Africa outlasted Catherine Mothes of France, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), and No. 5 Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Linda Ferrando of Italy, 7-5, 6-0.

Seventh-seeded Sabine Hack of Germany defeated Emanuela Zardo of Switzerland, 6-1, 6-3; Federica Bonsignori of Italy defeated Noelle Van Lottum of France, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Laura Golarsa of Italy beat Andrea Vieira of Brazil, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
