COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Orange Coast Teams Dominate Conference Meet

Orange Coast completed its dominance of the Orange Empire Conference swimming championships Saturday by taking the men’s and women’s titles Saturday at Saddleback.

The OCC women’s team, considered the favorite to win the state title, won all four individual events and both relays Saturday to finish with 774 points in the three-day event.

Saddleback was second with 510 points and San Diego Mesa (430) was third. Perri Simkins won the 100 butterfly (1:02.32), Michelle Quigley won the 100 freestyle (54.29), Kristine Hansen won the 100 backstroke (1:02.50) and Lynn Sansui won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.43). The Pirates also won the 200 medley relay (1:56.80) and the 200 freestyle (1:40.96).

Grant Ferguson set a conference record in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.27) and Luis Uceda won the 200 butterfly (1:59.22) for OCC, which won the men’s title with 649 points. Grossmont (582) was second.

In the South Coast Conference championships:

Golden West sweeps--Rafael Guijarro won the 1,650 freestyle in 16:27.75 to lead Golden West to the men’s conference championship.

Jennifer Bloomfield won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.87 and Belinda Kernkamp won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.24 to lead the Rustlers to the women’s championship.

Stephanie Kramer swam a 1:10.24 to win the 100 breaststroke for Golden West.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 7, Riverside 6--David Gonzalez had an RBI single in the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie for host Rancho Santiago (28-6, 13-5). Darren Troilo had three hits, including a double, for Rancho Santiago.
