HE’S NO. 1: The National Football League staged its annual draft Sunday, with teams selecting last season’s best college players with an eye toward bolstering their Super Bowl chances (C1). . . . The Rams used their top pick to select Jerome Bettis, a bruising, 247-pound running back from Notre Dame. Bettis said he’s pleased to be going to a team coached by Chuck Knox, an old-school type who believes it is more blessed to run than pass and receive. “His style fits my style,” Bettis said, “so I figure it’s a perfect match.”
