Six Ventura County high school seniors have won $2,000 National Merit Scholarships, the Evanston, Ill.-based group announced Tuesday.
A total of 2,000 winners across the country were selected from more than 1 million applicants, spokeswoman Elaine Detweiler said.
In Ventura County, the winners were Thomas A. Niday of Moorpark, who goes to Moorpark High School; Jeffrey A. Bowers of Oxnard, who attends Oxnard High School; Cathleen N. Nuniyoshi of Camarillo, who attends Camarillo High School; also Thousand Oaks residents Kevin L. Krim, a student at Thousand Oaks High School, and Karin L. McCool and Maria A. Smith, who both attend Westlake High School.
A committee of college admissions officers whittled the applicants down to 15,000 finalists and selected the winners by considering academic records, recommendations by principals and the students’ contributions to their schools and communities, Detweiler said.
