LOS ANGELES : Wachs Is Out of Race, but Keeps Attacking Woo

He finished out of the money in last week’s mayoral primary, but City Councilman Joel Wachs kept right on campaigning Tuesday.
In a bid to expose what he said is a meaningless campaign promise by fellow Councilman Michael Woo, Wachs called for a City Council vote on Woo’s proposal to declare an economic “state of emergency” in Los Angeles.
When the proposal failed, Wachs said he had proved his point--that the proposal was an inane response to the city’s economic crisis. Woo, who faces lawyer-businessman Richard Riordan in a June runoff for mayor, called Wachs’ action a lame effort that misrepresented his true economic plan.
Most of the City Council agreed that the debate was a waste of time.
“I think Mr. Wachs has made his point and Mr. Woo has made his point,” Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky said. “Unfortunately, the other guy (Riordan) is not around so we can beat up on him, too, just to level the playing field.”
