ANAHEIM : Plan Unit Is Advised to OK Disney Resort

City administrators Tuesday suggested that the Planning Commission endorse the environmental impact report and planning documents for the proposed Disneyland Resort.
In their report to the planning panel, which is beginning its review of the project, city staff advised that “the benefits of the project outweigh the unavoidable adverse environmental impacts.”
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed $3-billion Disneyland expansion beginning at 1:30 p.m. today in the Inn at the Park.
As many as 1,000 people are expected to attend the hearing, city spokesman Bret Colson said. The city is prepared to continue the meeting until midnight and if necessary resume it on Thursday.
The hearing gives the public an opportunity to express concerns or support for the massive project, which would be built next to Disneyland.
The Planning Commission will listen to comments about the proposed resort’s environmental and zoning impacts and later make a recommendation about the project to the City Council.
If the council approves the environmental and zoning documents, Disney would be cleared to begin construction on the project, which currently calls for a second theme park named Westcot, six new hotels, a 5,000-seat amphitheater and a retail shopping district inside the park.
Many of the speakers are expected to restate comments submitted in writing during the public comment period on the project’s draft environmental impact report.
Two weeks ago, the city released its responses to the written comments and, for the most part, concluded that no additional studies or mitigation measures were needed.
Several groups, including Anaheim’s school districts, the city of Garden Grove and a citizens group called Anaheim HOME, were dissatisfied with the city’s responses.
Before members of the public are given a chance to speak today, Disney officials will make a presentation on the project.
The hearing will be in the Plaza Ballroom at the hotel at 1855 S. Harbor Blvd in Anaheim.
